Dirt and Jar of Flies are both Alice In Chains' most essential releases, nothing else they did could touch either of them in terms of ground covered, consistency, songwriting and instrumentation. Although I do think Dirt is by far their best, this definitely isn't too far behind and it's actually the one I tend to listen to more these days. Seven songs, and not one of them is bad. Jar Of Flies contains everything you'd expect after listening to Dirt - it's dark, depressing, complex, heavy, visceral but at the same time, it's nothing like you'd expect.

Jar of Flies is one of the most popular vinyls you can find from Alice In Chains. In terms of popularity it’s by far one of the most popular EPs ever released. Although EPs like the Jay-z- Linkin Park collision course have repeated the feat, Jar of Flies was the first EP to ever debut at the top of the billboard.My favourite song on the album and one of the best songs Alice In chains ever wrote and recorded. Actually, forget that. It's one of the best songs ever written and recorded. Period. The most emotionally stirring on the album, and one of the most emotionally affecting songs I've ever heard. It's just a song that means so much. It's so deep, complex, dark and incredibly haunting. Never have I heard a song that portrays loneliness, depression and isolation in such a way. I also think that it's Layne's best vocal performance as well, which is a real compliment considering how amazing a vocalist he was. 'Nutshell' is so full of pain, depression, torture and misery. As haunting as it is beautiful.
