About this deal

This is probably one of the easiest ways to determine whether your diamond is real or not, however, it is not conclusive. Get a glass full of water and simply drop your diamond into the glass. If the diamond is real, it will drop to the bottom of the glass due to the high density of the stone. If it's a fake, it will float on the surface of the water. Unfortunately, not all fake diamonds float in water, so you might want to use another one of the techniques here. If the diamond is real, it will not react to the sudden change in temperature. The diamond should not have any changes. All you may see is a bit of residual ash from the flame. If you've inherited or received a gift of gems or jewelry, you're probably wondering whether the stones are real diamonds, other white gems, or manufactured imitations. This test is not always foolproof. Some materials that make up fake diamonds, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite, can sink if they are heavy enough. It’s best to combine the floating test with another at-home evaluation to tell if your diamond is real. TheNewspaper Test Fraudulent diamonds, such as those made from moissanite, do not have the same abilities. Fog lingers on fake diamonds, just like it would on a cell phone screen or mirror. The Floating Test

If the gem shatters, it's certainly not a diamond. (It was probably cubic zirconia or glass). However, the test doesn't prove that a surviving gem is a diamond. Moissanite, white sapphire, white topaz, white spinel, YAG, and GGG all have low or no heat sensitivity and may survive this test. Another method to determine if your diamond is real or fake is to use a lighter to light the stone for about 30 to 40 seconds before dropping it in cold water. If it's a fake diamond, it will shatter to pieces but a real diamond won't have a reaction to it. This is because weaker materials will not be able to handle the rate at which it expands and then contracts due to the heat of the fire. Real diamonds, however, have been formed under intense pressure and heat underground from billions of years ago. While this is a more accurate way to test a stone's authenticity, it can be dangerous to use fire, so be sure to use proper safety measures and use heat-resistant gloves when handling the diamond. Using a diamond scale A newspaper or a piece of paper with a small dot drawn on it. This test is only appropriate for loose gems, not set ones. How to Perform the Test If you are selling a diamond, investing in a GIA Diamond Grading Report can help you justify your diamond’s financial value. If you are buying or already own a diamond, a grading report can give you more information about your stone.

GIA uses the 4cs to determine diamond quality: color, carat weight, clarity, and cut. In addition, GIA may evaluate the diamond’s fluorescence, polish, symmetry, and proportions. What You'll Need Many of the tests outlined here, such as the fire test and the fog test can help to confirm whether your diamond is real or not. But because of the complexity of synthetic gemstones, we highly recommend combining a few of these tests together to really get an answer to your burning question of whether you have a real diamond or not. We have developed a bespoke colour for Guru range of floats, designed from scratch. This is a heron-grey colour, helping the floats remain discrete and inoffensive when in water. They all look attractive and consistent on the shelf too. The new lab experiments now show how molten carbonate reacts with other chemicals in Earth's lithosphere to release the gas, offering a likely mechanism for speeding up the dense magma.

This test can tell you one more thing. Since moissanites temporarily change color when they're heated, if the gem turned brown, then maybe green or yellow, it's a moissanite. What's the Best Way to Spot a Fake Diamond?

Ideally, a full gemstone hardness kit. Otherwise, some material of known hardness, as high as possible. How to Test for Hardness
