With the help of a courageous Fellowship of friends and allies, Frodo embarks on a perilous mission to destroy the legendary One Ring. The tremendous design work that went into the costumes, weapons and set dressing finally gets a proper showcase for the home audience; the detail and definition on these discs is superb. As with the extended DVD editions, the films have been split over two discs, so no information has been lost in compression. Extra feature DVDs (2 for each movie) are the SAME as those of DVD editions. In fact, the DVDs are identical when I do head-to-head comparison. These DVDs are pulled straight from the older DVD editions, nothing new added there. On the 'The Return of the King' disc, there is a nine minute SD interview between Monaghan and Wood, played off as a hoax of sorts on Wood. Monaghan doesn't do a bad German, but the joke here is on us, not Wood, as it isn't all that funny. release tests the waters as a nine-disc "movies only" edition, with each theatrical cut getting a triple-layer 100GB disc to itself and the extended cuts Watching The Lord of the Rings Trilogy in 4k with HDR is really like watching the film for the first time. Even though you may already have every scene memorized, the visual improvements are like candy for your eyes. Dim your lights, crank up the volume, and make some microwave popcorn for this binge-worthy home theater experience.

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Blu-ray delivers great video and reference-quality audio in this excellent Blu-ray release The upgraded audio isn’t as much of a jump as it is in video, as previous Blu-ray editions already featured incredible DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 surround sound. But the Dolby Atmos capabilities expand the potential to distribute sound overhead and behind (with the right speaker system) and add other audio channel to the surround sound format. The Maps in LOTR of Middle Earth never looked so sharp, and neither have the shots of the ‘One Ring’ with carved inscriptions that are incredibly detailed, beautifully luminous, and perfectly legible (if you could read Elvish tengwar – if not, Galadriel provides the translation). As of yet, there is no announced release date for these films individually, but it's sure to happen, just as it did for the Theatrical Editions on Blu-ray. However, if you do not own the DVD versions, then this is a must buy as this includes almost everything that you can think of (HD movies, extra features, behind the scenes, plus digital copies).

As wonderful as all that is, here's the bad news: the special features are all presented on DVD and they've pretty much all been released before. In addition to the extras from the extended edition DVDs you also get the three Costa Botes making-of documentaries, one for each film, that were included in the limited edition DVD release. An HD upgrade to the documentaries would have gone a long way towards alleviating the disappointment at the redundancy in the supplemental materials. On the bright side, there is one new extra thrown in, and it's even one that might appeal to the IGN audience, a preview of the upcoming video game The Lord of the Rings: The War in the North. At least that's something.
