I also found the 3-5 page stories themselves to be so short that I could not become vested in them nor connect them. Tres vidas, tres historias que nacieron unidas y que la tragedia las separa, y cada una en un giro de un caleidoscopio tienen una vida tan diferente.

I enjoyed, "growing up' with Hilary and the other characters, as the story seems to begin anew each time a character is introduced, they each have their own quirks, as well as weaknesses revealed throughout the story. Reading this book was an absolute pleasure, but I must say I’m devastated by the fact that it’s over. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! The picture wheels on each page are perfect for small fingers, and the bright, charming images will encourage everyone to get involved.

To soothe himself in the face of the immense pain of the world, a man steals and hoards beautiful objects, but in a fit of rage and despair he smashes them all. A deftly written family saga that explores—and challenges—the contemporary American dream and the meaning of home and family. Brian Selznick's books have sold millions of copies, garnered countless awards worldwide, and been translated into more than 35 languages. I'd recommend this book to those who love tragic, affectionate, and dramatic story lines, with a twist that wraps up the story in a subtle, yet decorative way. The younger ones are adopted whereas Hilary is left on her own to go through the most devastating phases of her life.

True to the book’s title, Wong tells her young protagonists’ story in fragments that shift through time and place, cohering into a beautiful, sparkling whole. Two people meet and miss one another again and again in these short chapters that move through time. Vaguely told and kinda lost, this story of friendship a bit empty and felt like it was telling another story. I was confused, but I trust Selznick’s writing and was (as always) captivated by his illustrations - so I kept reading. This book features two different methods for making flying geese and half square triangles – traditional method and triangle paper and foundation paper. Joyful case studies of homes that range from lightly speckled to heavily doused in colour with interviews from the renowned designers that created them, Kaleidoscope explores ways to use colour in the home, enticing readers into the world of the happy hued house.

A section on basic constructional techniques is followed by ten projects, some of which are simple enough for a child to make. Here he takes an illustration and turns it first into a kaleidoscope image, only revealing the actual image after the page turn. However, it is the character who remembers most of their shared past that becomes the linchpin of the narrative. Middle school readers aren't quite the sophisticated type to appreciate a book that is rich in themes but lacks plot or characters.

Wong’s insightful and compelling novel follows two sisters in a moving and complex look at ambition and success. Kaleidoscope is a feat of storytelling that illuminates how even the wildest tales can help us in the hardest times.
