National Geographic and Resler feed every kid's question with the answers they've been looking for. How do refrigerators work? Find a pretty cool explanation in this book. Is your child wanting to be a roboticist? Meet Helen Greiner, an engineer, computer scientist, and roboticist in this book. Need to explain the importance of flushing the toilet to your boys (I STILL have issues in my house), then show your kids how a toilet and plumbing works with this book. There are even "Try This" experiments you can do at home with everyday household objects to learn...you guessed it....how something works. Does your child love to take things apart to see how they work? Do they constantly ask why or how something is made or created? Do you think they could create the next big invention? Then this book is for them! In a new warning from our warming world, the oceans have just hit their hottest ever recorded temperature. What is climate change and why should it worry us? Key scientific principles illustrated with Macaulay's brand of dry humour, using lighthearted stories involving mammoths. urn:lcp:howthingsworkphy00bloo:epub:ea8ef6a8-cdca-426a-9c55-dd5d7da6440a Extramarc MIT Libraries Foldoutcount 0 Identifier howthingsworkphy00bloo Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t0ks7z242 Isbn 9780471594734

Great idea for a book, not-up-to-expectation execution. Even my science-savvy 12 years old sister couldn't pay attention for more than 10 minutes into the book. Apart from the very much lively illustration (which is the best thing about the book), it didn't teach the children much about anything nor being thought-provoking. Trying not to be rude but I wish brilliant.org had written this book. Why buy yourself an expensive computer or programs to go with it when you can get access to something just as good We have had this book now a few weeks and my four year old train obsessed son is still not Board with it.

I expected something better. Macaulay's illustrations are well crafted and occasionally humorous, but the accompanying text is sometimes excessively complex or jargon laden. I'm not really sure who his intended audience is, and that may be the problem. I expect something like this to appeal to a tween to YA looking for inspiration about how the engineered world works, or I expect it to appeal to an adult who appreciates a youthful approach.

This is a super book for kids. The sense of humor the author brings makes the reading fun while sharing educationally pertinent information about how specific things work in today's world. Bits of scientific history are thrown in making the journey toward achievement to market an item understandable. Ask any teacher and STEM is what everyone is talking about in the education world. The illustrations just pop out at the reader grabbing attention and pointing to exciting information. There is a plethora of things to explore the inner workings. It should be understood, though, that this is a children's book and the complexities of how things work is not the actual goal. It is general, and understandable to ages 7 to 10, amount of knowledge. It will, however, be good reading for older kids and adults as well.
