The scientific summaries agree that glucomannan hasn’t been sufficiently studied for weight loss and the few existent studies are flawed and not worth further pursuit. the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of glucomannan in three doses of 1 g each, together with 1-2 glasses of water, before meals and in the context of an energy-restricted diet. Collectively, these data outline the intrinsic impacts of glucomannan on tumor cell apoptosis, proliferation, and metastatic activity, which are the essential basis for its anti-tumor function. To a large extent, such effects are attributed to glucomannan-mediated inhibition of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. As a result, increased ratio of pro-apoptotic to anti-apoptotic gene expression undermines the immortality of tumor cells, while the reduced level of CCR7 and CXCR4 compromises their migratory capability. Glucomannan Enhances Anti-Oxidative Activity and Induces Autophagy in Tumor Cells As per 2008, it was still on basic cable, still promoted with a mixed hard sell/soft sell tactic and still a lot more expensive than other glucomannan supplements despite its ‘buy 2 get 2 free’ type promises, which apply when one calls ‘right now,’ of course.

As a prebiotic fibre, glucomannan may offer benefits for gut health – including promoting good gut bacteria. But there is not yet enough evidence to say for sure. Does Glucomannan Cause Constipation? Several clinical trials showed that glucomannan could aid with weight-loss and the treatment of obesity when taken on a daily basis. Glucomannan foods are available in markets and may slightly enhance a diet rich in fiber, which is highly recommended. As a result, fibre reduces calorie consumption: People who eat a lot of fibre have been found to eat fewer calories overall thanks to its appetite-reducing effects. With a lower food intake, weight loss may be more manageable. Clinical trials suggest it could help an overactive thyroid when used alongside methimazole and propranolol. In the EU, some konjac products are banned for the same reason. Is Glucomannan Good for Gut Health? Another study gave obese adults a glucomannan supplement before breakfast, lunch, and dinner for eight weeks. The study found no benefit for weight loss compared to a group who took a placebo. Glucomannan is a diet supplement that has done precisely what it was supposed to do for the people that stood to profit from it. On the other hand, the probiotics, mainly lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, are indicated for their anti-colorectal cancer function through binding to the mutagens, inhibiting the activity of β-glucuronidase, and reducing the level of carcinogenic secondary bile acid ( Wu et al., 2011a; Chong, 2013). In various studies, glucomannan is shown to enhance the content of probiotics and its metabolic products, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), in feces ( Mizutani and Mitsuoka, 1982; Ikegami et al., 1984; Yeh et al., 2007; Wu and Chen, 2011b; Wu et al., 2011a; Chong, 2013; Wu et al., 2014; Quezada et al., 2017). SCFAs promote the functionality of normal intestinal epithelium and the gut integrity ( Chong, 2013); also, they stimulate cell differentiation program and induce apoptosis of transformed cells ( Kumano et al., 1985; Yeh et al., 2007; Chong, 2013). Taken together, these results suggest that glucomannan could indirectly promote an environment that is unfavorable for cancer development, at least in the gastroenterological system ( Figure 2). Glucomannan Serves as a Targeted Carrier for Anti-Cancer Drug Delivery

Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem in western nations, yet is a preventable disease in most cases. It is believed by experts that problems arise in response to sudden spikes in glucose, typically from the consumption of sugary foods and drinks. When these spikes of blood glucose occur repeatedly, the body can start to become resistant to the effects of insulin. It’s a prebiotic that feeds the friendly bacteria in your gut. Find out more: Prebiotic vs Probiotic: What’s the Difference? In adults, there is evidence that glucomannan can help increase bowel movements by 30%. In children, glucomannan has been found to relieve constipation, stomach pain, and bloating. 4. Glucomannan can help regulate blood glucose Glucomannanabsorbs so much liquid that if you empty a capsule into a small glass of water, the entire thing turns into a gel. B ecause of this, it is important to take capsules with a full glass of water to safely and naturally assist weight loss. Nutritionists have long known that dietary fibre offers a range of health benefits. However, not all forms of fibre are identical. Glucomannan is one source of fibre that has grown significantly in popularity recently, and for good reason as we will see.

Glucomannan can be an effective tool in your weight loss plan. It can reduce your appetite, promote a balanced gut, and ease constipation — and this can help you achieve a healthy weight and feel healthier overall. It is no secret that being overweight can be bad for your health. High levels of body fat are linked to a range of unpleasant conditions from heart disease to some cancers. At the same time, many people believe that we are programmed to retain excess calories in case of lean times ahead. No wonder that losing weight is so difficult for much of the population, despite the importance of doing so. Findings showed that all three glucomannan groups had significant weight loss compared to placebo or diet groups. However there was little statistical difference between the three – participants in all three glucomannan groups lost approximately 0.8 kg (1.8 lbs) per week.

Studies proved that bile acid is in close relationship with the carcinogenesis process ( Mizutani and Mitsuoka, 1982). It could promote gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation ( Jia et al., 2018) and change the composition of normal gut microbiota, by means of which bile acid becomes a risk factor during tumor formation ( Jia et al., 2018). Administration of Konjac glucomannan was found to increase the fecal output of total bile acids in rats ( Ikegami et al., 1984; Wu and Chen, 2011b). What’s more, Konjac glucomannan significantly decreases secondary bile acid level in human subjects ( Wu et al., 2011a). Therefore, the reduction of bile acids would be another functional aspect of glucomannan supplementation. A separate 2007 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition involved participants taking a combination of glucomannan and psyllium husk (another dietary fibre). Findings showed that the fibre group lost an average of 10 lbs over 16 weeks compared to 1.7 lbs in the placebo group. There are a few other uses, none of which are related to weight loss. Konjac, Glucomannan and the Western World Presumably, any company that advertises it so persistently has made a very satisfying amount of money by now.The results are, ultimately, inconclusive. There is hope that glucomannan can be an effective weight loss solution, but there’s not enough evidence to say for sure. It is important to reiterate the ability of glucomannan to absorb moisture, and to swell significantly as it does so. It is therefore important to ensure that glucomannan is washed down with at least one glass of water; otherwise it may fail to offer the same health benefits or could start to expand before it reaches the stomach. Side Effects & Interactions of Glucomannan One study is Asian, but like much of the other research focuses on the use of glucomannan in animal feed. One clinical study into 176 overweight adults found that supplementing a reduced-calorie diet with glucomannan significantly increased the amount of weight lost compared to a placebo. However, the study compared different fibres, and there was not much difference between their effects and those of glucomannan. With so many products out there claiming to help you lose weight, it’s not always easy to know what to trust – and it can be pretty hard to find reliable information.
