About this deal

Rich in practical advice and practical wisdom, full of Biblical examples and how they relate to maturing spiritually, and the author does an excellent job laying out basic principles and simple straightforward steps any person can take to grow in their relationship with Christ. At the end of each chapter are helpful applications to the topic being studied and useful additional resources for further reading. When his intent became apparent to his servants, one tried to dissuade him, saying, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite? great book for any and every Christian man wanting to serve His God-the practice of godliness-work and discipline-no easy way to success in anything and that holds good in the spiritual/moral realm.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.

He is very helpful and speaks to you as if you were both sitting down for a cup of coffee at the barista. Finally, there is a short epilogue with a concluding argument for the importance of Godly discipline and the correct response to grace God has given us. Kent Hughes was in pastoral ministry for 41 years, the last 27 as senior pastor of College Church in Wheaton.

It pointed out many areas in my life where I have lacked spiritual discipline and has provided many useful resources and tips which I will be definitely referring back to (sections on prayer, worship, devotion and giving I found very helpful in particular). Read this through my men’s Bible study and although, I would have probably not chosen this book to read by myself Im glad I read it.

This book is an excellent overview of the practices that Christian men should work to incorporate into all aspects of their lives. The difference between legalism and discipline is one of motivation: legalism is self-centered; discipline is God-centered. Each chapter looks at the discipline being discussed by follow by a section titled “Food for Thought” that has great discussion questions and there’s also an application/response section following that.

There are some books on what it means to be a Christian man that feel more like they are fueled by popular movies and books (such books shall remain unnamed.

Through a series of short, yet accurate chapters on a variety of areas that pertain to Christian men, Hughes drives home the point that spiritual discipline is a necessary part of the believer's life.

Again, chapters like being involved in church, giving money, and witnessing (evangelism) are typical and as expected. I went through this book with other men together and every single chapter there was stuff that convicted us and encouraged us. I think this is a serviceable introduction to the disciplines but readers should approach it with the Gospel firmly in their heart and mind. In his book, Kent Hughes seeks to address this problem at its starting point, the area of spiritual discipline for the average Christian man. Update: When I originally read this book, it was a book I thought would be beneficial to re-read every 2 years.Well written and to the point, as it was written 2 decades ago it doesn't stray into the nonsense of today's gender confusion and I found that very refreshing. He earned his BA from Whittier College (history), an MDiv from Talbot Seminary and a DMin from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
