The best thing is, I can still remember writing those tasting notes. There’s this snapshot edged into my retina. Me sitting at the dining table having this sort of emotional moment. Not because it was the best whisky I ever tasted. But simply because a trusty friend showed up and exceeded expectations. Maybe that’s why I haven’t taken the time to sit down and write tasting notes once again – afraid to be disappointed. I will warn you there is a slight soapy taste most prevalent in the mid palate, but not in a bad way, at least not to me. This 10 also gets better as it stands. So the key word with a bottle like this is, "take your time", be patient, slow down to its pace and you will be greatly rewarded with the deliciousness that is Benromach 10. On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate. You may find it helpful to take a peek at the flavour wheels here: http://malt-review.com/2015/09/10/whisky-flavour-wheels-and-colour-charts/ and I’d also massively recommend looking at the WSET systematic approach to tasting (designed for wine, mostly, but it feeds very well into spirits too). It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying. When you let it breathe and open up the nose on this is one of the best, very oldskool. Those aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts and chocolate is truly something to behold. side note: Dear whisky marketers, please stop saying you only use the finest oak, it means nothing. EVERYONE says they only use the finest oak casks and mathematically that just isn’t possible. This is an eye-rolling, cringe-worthy, ghost statement. Use your words to give us real, useful, info about the process. The only way “we only use the finest oak casks” would mean anything is if there were brands touting their use of only the most tired and worn-out 5th+ fill casks. That will never happen, so please. Stop the garbage marketing fluff. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. Those who have rated this whisky a 4.. are spot on. Though let me make it clear, this is not just any 4.. this is a strong 4.. a special 4 as this whisky deserves. But it can't go beyond 4 because of its flaws, yet.. ironically, it is the flaws that earn it a .. "special" 4. Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv.Finish drifts off into the night on a smoky ashy trail leaving the drinker wondering what exactly happened… on first sniff and sip that is. Once you know what to expect and settle in, this whisky shows a nice complexity and the ride becomes less jarring, more even and more enjoyable. The The Benromach 10 Years is a good sipping malt.
