I think best technique is to place the flat scraper near the gum line, slide it up to pull the gum back slightly and expose the top edge of the plaque, then slowly but forcefully slide it down the tooth toward the tongue. Plaque is a sticky layer that develops from saliva, food and bacteria which can develop into a buildup of brown tartar. I will provide a blanket and or toy for each puppy and that is what they puppy will go home with along with a few extras. I will say that I have NEVER had an ear infection in my dogs (knock on wood) I use these products on my dogs and ALWAYS have something similar in my house!
