One thing Apple badly needs to sort out, though, is its auto brightness feature. The current setup is to blind you if you look at the phone in the dark, where other phones are more adept at dropping right down to the lowest possible brightness to save you from burning out your retinas. It also doesn’t work with gloves, which isn’t particularly good news when the winter months are drawing in fast. We’ve tried a number of different gloves to test this out, and while some touchscreen gloves did work, the vast majority didn’t, so be prepared to brave the cold when you’re using your iPhone 7 this winter. It’s even more vexing now that iOS 10 doesn’t let you get to the PIN screen unless you press the home button, as swiping to the right and left only bring up the camera and search screens respectively.

The iPhone 7 was a fantastic phone when it first came out in September 2016, but that’s over two years ago now. Although its successor, the iPhone 8, was overshadowed by the iPhone X and has now been replaced by the iPhone XR, it’s still a better phone in every sense of the word. The iPhone 7’s new, improved camera isn’t as immediately impressive as its specs might suggest. While its 12-megapixel sensor has been improved since the iPhone 6s, introducing optical image stabilisation, a brighter f/1.8 aperture that lets 50% more light into the new, six-element lens, and a quad-LED flash, my initial test shots didn’t blow me away. home button is a virtual button now and not a mechanical. The phone can’t be used with older e.g. iphone 6 armband cases To a degree that's right, but in truth if this is the best that can be done on battery life then it's something of a problem, as the iPhone 7 isn't stellar at all in that department. iPhone 7 is water resistant. Boasting an IP67 rating against dust and splash, it can withstand a dunk in the pool or a soak in the shower. Though it has joined the ranks of waterproof smartphones, it is not swim-proof. Apple also expressly excludes any form of water damage from its guarantee. Force Touch with Taptic Engine

This is where Apple sets out its stall when it comes to its screens: it's not about the sharpness, or the number of nits of brightness – it's how the display looks when it's in your hands that matters. There's also 3D Touch in the mix again – it's an identical system to that on the iPhone 6S, where the handset can detect the amount of pressure your finger is exerting on the screen. We were promised loads of apps that make use of this, but while most icons will do something when force is exerted, it's not often very useful. How you view this screen depends on what phone you're coming from on – if it's the iPhone 6 or lower, then you'll love the display, as it's brighter, more colorful and just as crisp as before. If, however, you're moving from certain Android handsets, then you might struggle with the lower res, as even many budget Android phones have 1080p screens, and side by side there is a drop. Battery life claim refers to larger models. All battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; actual results will vary. Battery has limited recharge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and charge cycles vary by use and settings. iPhone 7 Rear Camera Replacement

The display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.42 inches (iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini), 5.85 inches (iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone XS, iPhone X), 6.06 inches (iPhone 14, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XR), 6.12 inches (iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro), 6.46 inches (iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max), 6.68 inches (iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro Max) or 6.69 inches (iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro Max) diagonally. Actual viewable area is less. A more welcome addition is the iPhone 7’s improved water and dust protection. Its IP67 rating means you can now drop the phone in up to a metre of water for up to 30 minutes without damaging its internals. This makes it much more practical to use on a daily basis, as you no longer need to worry about accidentally dropping it down the loo or getting caught using it during a heavy rain shower. And to that end, the iPhone 7 is a step forward from the 6S. The screen is more colorful – not in an overpowering technicolor way, but just in terms of richness, with the depth of color matching that of the 'cinema screen' according to Apple. It's a hard metric to test, but the color quality is certainly high.

Perhaps it's something to do with the fact that these features aren't the first of their kind to market, but there's something unexciting about the iPhone 7 being waterproof. It had already been done already by Sony on the Xperia Z and Samsung on the Galaxy S7, and those phones combined impressive design with the reassurance that you could sling them in a lake and still have a working phone. It's still a nice feature to have, but it's one that now in 2019 most high-end phones have, including numerous other iPhones, and one that Android got first.
