Description

For those who already owned a P900 camera, very little has changed on the outside of the camera. There’s a chunky grip at the front of the camera, while much of the camera has a textured coating which helps to give a feeling of high quality. Also, the stabilisation can’t smooth out the bumps, shake and wobble that’s inevitable if you walk with the camera. If you want to shoot run and gun style, you’ll need some other form of stabilisation.

The camera would sometimes stop responding to all control inputs when photographs were taken at a setting of [ Continuous H: 120 fps] or [ Continuous H: 60 fps]. The number of occasions when it's possible to take a decent image with a 2000mm equiv lens are extremely limited, due to heat shimmer, atmospheric haze, camera shake, limitations of sensor in low light etc etc. Still, the P950 does what a lot of other cameras can't do. And if you're a fan of capturing wildlife, or just looking for a single-camera solution for a national park, the P950 is a very good option overall. It's still in a niche, but not quite as narrow of one as the Nikon P1000, an even larger, heavier superzoom with a 125x lens. However, if you’re keen to get frame-filling shots of the moon or start photographing wildlife, it could be a good introduction. Even in optimal lighting the P950 just doesn't deliver the same level of vibrancy and visual punch we've now grown accustomed to from good camera phones. (Image credit: Future) Verdict The only reason to consider buying the Nikon Coolpix P950 is its lens, which – covering an equivalent focal length range of 24-2000mm – is extraordinary. There are very few cameras that can match the P950's versatility, although you'll get better image quality and more advanced autofocus from several similarly-priced (but less ambitious) compact cameras. The P950 is an enjoyable camera to use thanks to its fast autofocus, which only slows a fraction when shooting in low light. While it is bigger than an entry-level APS-C DSLR with a modest lens, it's not ridiculously bloated like the P1000 and doesn't attract as much attention as a result. The zoom range is also more manageable, and we never had any reason to want more than 83x optical zoom, rendering the 125x reach of the P1000 more of a bragging right than an actual necessity. I took care to ensure that the front element of the lens was clean, and clear of water droplets, but there’s flare in quite a few of my images when the sun is at 90-degrees to the lens.

Other top-plate controls include the Fn button—it's programmable, and adjusts the continuous drive mode by default. The On/Off button, Mode dial, and the main command dial round out the top controls. In practical terms, you can shoot wide-angle views, similar to what the main lens on most smartphones captures, zoom in to bring distance subjects to view, or anywhere in between. There are some trade-offs made, with the sensor size being one, and the lens aperture another. It opens up to a very reasonable f/2.8, but it drops off as you zoom, eventually settling in at f/6.3. Magnification of Dynamic Fine Zoom is calculated from the maximum wide-angle position of the optical zoom. Pricing and Availability Being able to shoot 4K video and in Raw format are perhaps the headline features. But improving the electronic viewfinder is another important update that improves the overall usability of the P950.Welcome to BirdForum, the internet's largest birding community with thousands of members from all over the world. The forums are dedicated to wild birds, birding, binoculars and equipment and all that goes with it. I assume you're referring to the gallery as a whole and not my 4K video which you replied to, as the D70 is incapable of 4K video, or even 4K stills. ;-) Again, as before, automatic white balance is excellent, producing accurate colours under a variety of different lighting conditions. Though specific white balance presets are available, you might find little need to use them - especially with the addition of raw format shooting support.
