About this deal

My biggest criticism with this book is that it is too short, and feels like it ends too soon. I am all for shorter books, not every book needs to be the next Eragon or what have you, but in all honesty I was more interested in the side plotline than the main one, and I felt like it wasn't wrapped up particularly well. But when she suddenly falls ill, it’s up to Safiya to use her gaming skills of following clues and building stories to uncover the truth about her mum’s history and find the things about her that will bind them together forever. I’m currently working on my second book, and it’s interesting to see how that has shifted. Writing is now, rather bizarrely, my job, and one I love more than I can say, but there are also expectations and deadlines and, with all of that, stress. So, I’ve tried my best to turn to other creative outlets, to help me when I’m struggling to write. Now I tend to follow authors much more closely than I did. My favourite MG author at the moment is Katherine Rundell; I always look forward to her next publication. I am also really excited to keep on reading Anna James’ and Cat Doyle’s books.

Mum’s good at talking to people, being a lawyer. She knows exactly what to say at all times. I’m different. I only know how to express myself in video games. Instead of words, I use spells and incantations. When I was younger I didn’t really follow authors, but rather series. I loved Harry Potter (and I still do), Eragon, Warrior Cats, and also The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and The Princess Dairies. I did collect Jacqueline Wilson books, and my firm favourites were The Illustrated Mum and Lola Rose.

I never struggle for something to say, my mind is always busy with thoughts, and I am quite acutely aware of my emotions. Safiya is different. She’s not always aware of how she’s feeling, and she often can’t find the words to express it. But she also has a strength inside of her that I know we all hold, waiting to come out when it matters, and that’s why I hope she will appeal to readers. This book was so much more than I ever thought it would be. I enjoyed every second of it, despite it ripping my heart in half. As both a mother and a daughter this story rang so familiar to me. It takes a common situation between a parent and child and gives it a unique life. The blurring of the fantasy world and the real world is done wonderfully. It's able to convey the desperate feelings of Safiya in a way that is both effective and hopeful. Safyia lives with her father as her parents are divorced. Safyia is at that pre-teen stage where everything is changing and friendships can be tested as well as her relationship with her mother. Aisha Bushbywas born in the Middle East and now lives in the UK. When she's not reading or writing stories for children, she likes playing cosy video games, watching animated films, and working on her miniature house. Tiny, The Secret Adventurer is her first for younger children. Sarah: It’s an absolute joy and an honour to work with authors to shape their books. We are in awe of anyone who can write a book – it takes not only talent but perseverance, patience and trust! To be a part of taking a book and helping to shape it to be the very best it can be is an enormous privilege, and one we never take lightly. That’s weird. Why would Dad message Elle? As soon as I see the stream of missed calls, voice messages and texts I know something’s wrong.
