Crafted in exceptionally tall stills, matured for 10 years in America White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and the fresh sea air with a further enhancement from the finest aged oloroso sherry casks from Jerez, Spain.

Distillery Facts: The distillery was founded in 1810, but fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in the early 1960s by two local estate owners. With approximately 200 Diurachs – the Gaelic name for the inhabitants – living on the island, most everyone there knows someone who works at Jura.A touch of peat brings a rich and rounded balance of subtle smoky notes with a sweet sherry cask finish. The palate follows the nose with a narrower band of apple or bear to go along with a dash of brine before dissipating with a frisson of light smoke and pepper. Today, almost every family on the island has a member who works in our distillery, with our distillery or in whisky-related tourism. The General Wine Company is a family-owned and operated wine merchant in Liphook, Hampshire, England. In 2018, the complete core line of Jura was retired as the distillery decided to move in a new flavor direction.

A smoky and unpeated whisky that is matured in bourbon casks and finished in sherry, this single malt is well-balanced and presents fruity, dark chocolate notes. I initially tried this neat and the nose was smokey with a sweetness not unlike peat, a little bit of water allowed the chocolate and coffee through as well as hints of ginger and orange with the smoke more in the background. For this most important of tasks, his equipment is simple – a tulip shaped glass, which will best capture the aroma of the whisky, and fresh water, which he adds to the whisky for nosing. His acute sense of smell enables him to determine which whiskies will combine successfully with others, and those which will fight.The resultant wort is fermented to produce the wash which then passes into the massive, continuously operating, two-columned Coffey or patent still.
