They might have been mistaken as ‘unhygienic’ when they first emerged on the market, but in recent years they've become hugely popular for being both practical and comfortable, as well as helping to eliminate the plastic waste that comes with disposable period products. They’re also a lot less faff than trying to insert a menstrual cup. Reusable pads and pants are widely available and can be easily washed at home and reused for many years. They are a great, more environmentally friendly option. If you can afford to, you can save money in the long term by buying reusable products like menstrual cups and period underwear, which have a higher cost upfront but are cheaper on a cost-per-wear basis.

We asked 563 period pant users to tell us their views on the brand (or brands) they used, focusing on aspects such as comfort, durability, appearance, value for money and protection from leaks. Some brands only offer one absorbency level, which pretty much replaces one tampon, but others have pants designed to be worn for longer periods of time or heavier flow, and hold up to 12 tampons. In December 2021, we surveyed users of period pants to find out what they liked and disliked, and how they rated the brands they'd used on factors such as leak protection, comfort and value for money. Here we provide information on the scheme and how your schools and colleges can get involved. What is the Period Products Scheme? Every pair of period pants has been tested and approved by our panel of 350 women and people who menstruate. They tried a variety of styles, sizes and absorbencies over the course of the trial period (the length of one actual period, which varied for each tester) from 22 brands. They rated them for comfort, breathability and softness, as well as how well they protected against leaks. Some are better at providing information on sustainable fabrics, their material's provenance and their supply chain. Some use certified organic fabrics, or recycled fabrics, which tend to be better for the environment. GH Tip: While organic tampons can be composted, the cardboard is non-recyclable because it's considered to be medical waste. Reusable tampon applicators It’s difficult to know whether any mood changes in teens are related to periods or if it’s just a case of the brain still developing while going through puberty.
