Description

My grain cells need renewal but overall it was wildest craziest darkest and funniest journey I’ve never had before! it starts off the kind of weird you can easily see in people you'd know in real life and devolves into a kind of weird that I can't tell if it was syfy or psychosis.

Alicia, for her part, makes everyone uncomfortable, touching Jen at every opportunity and oversharing trauma: “‘I was actually’ — and here Alicia raises a finger as if bragging — ‘one of the youngest bulimic patients at the recovery center! Effortlessly beautiful and naturally enviable, her Instagram page is a compilation of her life’s perfection and her journey to being her best self. Hearing the advice from The Apple Bush felt eerily familiar: all of the language used around self-help is now mainstream and no longer derided as hippie “woo-woo,” rebranded instead in masculinist and capitalist terms as efficiency, productivity, and personal success. But some of it is woven in very naturally through this self-help book that gets passed between the characters and referenced more and more. In the first part: we’re introduced not so lovely but absolutely “are you for real kind” of agitating characters: Remy and Alice: looking like boring couple in their thirties, service workers and only thing connects them their obsession to Remy’s former colleague Jen who pursues her dream as jewelry designer. But Alicia gets her way and it is this particular surfing trip which begins to pivot Remy and Alicia’s story into a new direction.

As Carla continues to repeat her New Age spiritual jargon to Remy, the ideas infiltrate his understanding of the world around him. In addition to being an intense and unique reading experience, along the way the author has some remarkable things to say about faith, solipsism, parasocial relationships, and how we derive meaning (or not) from the barrage of sensory inputs that make up our daily lives. Having few others to turn to, Remy spends more time with Jake, who strives to be as supportive as he can be. More than anything, he is almost annoyed with her, and wishes she were still there so he could complain to her about inconveniences such as Alicia’s bothersome parents, who annoyingly want to involve him in all the funeral planning. With an imagination like this, Beth Morgan has quite a future in fiction and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. let me be honest, all characters in this book accept jake are like the worst people, but it's like a train wreck; awful, but you can't look away. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
