It might not be the best choice for high-traffic areas in your home, like floors, eating spaces, and kitchen countertops, as it cannot offer the same level of protection as polyurethane or varnish. It is likely that the oil has broken down and let water in, oak left without a finish will naturally turn a silver grey as it ages.

Note: This method allows Danish Oil to penetrate deep into the timber, naturally waterproofing and nourishing when using our Tung Oil based product.

Once I am satisfied with the number of coats, I will wait 15 minutes, then wipe the surface of the piece completely dry making sure there are no drips or pools of finish.

The first coat will quickly soak into the wood, leave it for a few minutes and then wipe away any excess. The reason that it has 'stood the test of time' is that until a few years ago there wasn't anything else like epoxy finishes or varnish so people used a delicate finish which was easy to apply rather than nothing at all. This is one of those finishing projects where pretty much anything can be justified, so enjoy the freedom!Alternatively, with oak I've just kept wiping it down every few hours and first thing in the morning (for the first 24 hours). A high quality blend of tung oil and natural resins that penetrate the wood to provide a tough, durable and waterproof finish. BUT I think you will find Everything will darken the apparent colour due to the enhanced contrast due to change in light reflection and lack of scatter. Just for my tastes, in the sunlight it's pretty and brings out the red, but in the shade it's just plain dull. Varnished, shellaced, lacquered or heavily stained wood will usually present a surface barrier to absorption of the Danish Oil, and will need to be removed as necessary with a proprietary paint stripper.

The instructions below under the heading 'how to apply Danish Oil' explain fully how to use the oil. Before applying finish, it is important to remove as much of the dust as possible from the work piece. We were advised by the joiner who fitted them, that Danish Oil would be the best to treat the doors with, so thats what we did. It is long-lasting and water-resistant, also it does not include any harsh chemicals that can harm indoor air quality. Our Wood Oil Kit contains all the products and accessories previously mentioned to correctly clean, prepare and oil all oak surfaces. They are comprised of many different combinations of natural and synthetic varnish and resins, mineral oil, tung oil, linseed oil, poppy oil, cotton oil, sunflower oil, white spirit, naptha, driers, anti-skin agents, etc etc! In what is easily my fanciest attempt at woodworking, I'm making a tree/stand for my watches using some red oak stair railing and 1" red oak dowel from HD.
