This helps them ascertain whether it needs to be placed near you or if it can heat the whole space from afar. In case you don't have enough clearance below a wall socket, you can rotate the heater section through 90°, however, this does locate the controls on the righthand side making them a little more difficult to access. I found it to be equivalent to the level of noise of the Beldray fan heater I tested – quiet enough to talk over but still noticeable. It has a few dust traps, but it was quiet (although continues to make a noise after it’s turned off, while it cools). Its compact size would also make it a great fan for the bedside table and we’d be able to sleep easy with it on, as it has overheat protection, a timer of up to 12 hours and tip-over protection.

This heater also comes with a remote control, the only niggle being it needs to be pointed directly at the heater for it to work – even small objects seem to block the signal. As convector heaters are slower to heat up from cold, it can be worthwhile to look for one with a timer so you can set it to come on before you want to use a room. The hot air jets on this compact heater are powerful, and we did enjoy whacking it up to the top setting and sitting near it like a cat next to a fireplace. Electric heaters may be essential if you live in one of the four million or so households in the UK that don’t use mains gas heating and are a good solution if you’re just looking to heat one room, or only need to heat in short, sharp bursts. It was also one of the more economical heaters – its lowest setting used 31p of electricity an hour. The heat escapes from the vent at the top, making this a convection heater like many others, but after about half an hour the rest of the cast iron body heats up too, radiating warmth outwards for quite a while after it’s turned off.

Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ.

This is best suited to warming up a small room like a kid’s bedroom just before putting them to bed, or in a small study while working.

Close up, the Beldray is cosy, but it would probably be a costly way to heat a medium-to-large room from cold. The high fan speed has more of a whine, so if you find it obtrusive, the lower speed may be more suitable. While it doesn’t have a remote control or an app, it’s easy to adjust the temperature in 1C increments, using the buttons on the top of the heater.

When we say fast, we mean Usain Bolt’s level of speed, raising the temperature from chilly to cosy in a matter of minutes.

Either side of the rocker button, LED lights indicate whether you have the heater running in boost mode (speeds medium and high) or eco mode (low speed), as well as if it’s connected to the WiFi. These provide a cosy warmth that allows you to enjoy your garden, decking or patio area throughout the year.
