Whether van Gogh intended to make his own Maja so very unsensual, or whether he saw her as the face of contemporary transactional sex (as Dix and Grosz were to depict in Berlin), in its truthfulness this remains a tough picture, as does Courbet’s The Origin. For several years, the Commission for Art Recovery (CAR) in New York, founded by Ronald Lauder, attempted to broker a deal with the dealer, who made extended and unsuccessful attempts to sell the work first in Budapest, and then London and Austria. What is somewhat harder is to grasp the range of his enterprise, and the manner in which apparently different subjects and themes – certainly according to the 19th century canon – are interlaced in a manner that gives real coherence to his overall corpus. This painting differs from Renoir’s nudes celebrating the beauty of the female body in harmony with Nature, as it is one of the few examples in the painter’s oeuvre of a nude in an indoor setting.

With facsimile of the artist's signature 'Renoir' printed below the plate from a small lithographic stone. This organic cotton tea towel features a detail of August Rodin’s watercolour painting, Femme nue allongée sur le ventre, vue de face et dressée sur les bras, c. Several decades later the exhibition Around Lévy-Dhurmer ( Autour de Lévy-Dhurmer) at the Galeries du Grand Palais in Paris in 1973 revealed a tendency in art which had been largely unknown until then and which remained on the margins of the great innovative movements of the 20th century, but which was nonetheless of a quality which could not be ignored. Pablo Picasso Clown et Femme Nue (Clown and Nude Woman), from Verve, 1954 was published in the winter of 1953-1954 in the French magazine Verve .

At one time, he painted a copy of the painting and, as a practical joke, sent it to be exhibited as the original at a Belgrade exhibition [1] of French painting in 1939. The painting in the Musée de l’Orangerie depicts Gabrielle, whom the Renoirs had engaged her to look after their children, and who quickly became one of the painter’s favourite models.
