I really liked the seeming randomness of the stories, and that they flow from one to the next with only loose connections, instead of as part of a more rigid organization like chronology. China already considered it extinct; the IUCN added it to the list of extinct species this year after extensive recent surveys. That year alone, CNN reported, an estimated ninety migrants from North Africa and other Arab countries were drowning every week in the Mediterranean in their bid to escape violence, poverty, persecution, and war. The book claims it eventually led to the extraordinary outburst from Johnson: “I am meant to be in control.

At times, I was completely enthralled, other times, I found my mind wandering to what I should make for dinner or economic equations. In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. It’s September 1781, and having departed the Guinea Coast for a sugar port in Jamaica, the Zong is overloaded with enslaved Africans. It identifies 137 amphibians, 257 reptiles, 38 birds and 130 mammals that have not been seen for at least 50 years and asks if that half-century of no sightings means they’re extinct.Photograph: Francis Dias/Newspix International View image in fullscreen Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie, whose rivalry with Dominic Cummings reportedly led to the adviser’s dismissal. The author takes you on a historical tour of Naples, revealing the city's rich history as well as its sights. This posthumous work brings together articles, interviews, statements, prefaces, manifestos, and speeches dating from 1964 to 1985 (just before Genet's death in 1986). Philip’s first novel, Harriet’s Daughter, was published in England in 1988, after a string of rejections from Canadian presses that felt the all-Black cast of characters was unsuited for the local market.

We follow him from the Chicago Democratic Convention (where he met William Burroughs and Alan Ginsberg) to Yale University, where he gave the famous May Day Speech in support of the Black Panthers, to Jordan and the Palestinian camps. These texts bear witness to the many political causes and groups with which Genet felt an affinity, including May ’68 and the treatment of immigrants in France, but especially the Black Panthers and the Palestinians. Another 2022 study warned about the threat of “ dark extinction,” the loss of species science has never even identified as having existed in the first place. Louis, the Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y, Bennington College and the Graduate Writing Division of the School of the Arts at Columbia. When the author compared Naples to the US Deep South in attitude of mourning for glories past and compelled to live in a country dominated by those who looked down upon that past, it resonated with me.I found this to be a hard read as so much information was offered that it was overwhelming, to the point of unpleasant, at times. So if you want to read about the Greeks, Lord Nelson and the joy of drinking espresso and eating real Italian food will taking long scenic strolls around the city, this is the book for you.

Between passionate enmity and passionate affinity, Genet speaks for a politics of protest, with an uncompromising outrage that, today, might seem on the verge of being forgotten. Reminiscent of Magris' _Danube_ but not nearly as dense which, for me, made _Naples Declared_ a better read. He makes rather charming company and shares a lot of fascinating historical tidbits, but somehow -- for me at least -- fails to convey the spirit of contemporary Naples, its odd mix of faded and soiled grandeur and its spooky, rather gothic je-ne-sais-quoi. Unfortunately, these few parts are buried beneath pages of rambling pontificating on the part of the author on a variety of subjects. But many species have gone unseen for decades, and while scientists still look for them every year, hope begins to dwindle after a time.

Taylor is a graduate of Haverford College and Columbia University where he earned the doctorate in English and comparative literature. Philip, whose sister was at the time dying of cancer, was unable to reply until a month later, at which point she explained she couldn’t adequately respond to Hamadeh’s request. He takes his stroll around the bay with the acute sensitivity of a lover, the good humor of a friend, and the wisdom of a seeker who has immersed himself in all aspects of this contrapuntal culture.

It is a bit of a travelogue, a bit of gentle commentary, and gives a few broad brushstrokes of history. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. To decorate for the Christmas season of 1982, the mall’s marketing director tied red bows around the necks of the hanging geese. Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. This land is also the traditional territory of the Anishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
