In the late 1970s the compact camera market started its trajectory into being the dominant camera form factor in terms of sales volumes. Even the fastest moving subjects are no challenge for the AF system of the AF35M, as long as the subject is covering that center AF spot.

Camera Geekery: The Nikon L35AF - Japan Camera Hunter

It was released in 1983, a few years after Nikon's competitors had opened up the point and shoot market. Pentax PC35AF– Thiscameraincludesa flash, self timer, automatic exposure with manual compensation of*1. It’s identical to that of the Pentax PC35AF — another great point-and-shoot with limited flaws — which comes with flimsiness but also requires you to shake your Nikon violently until the first one pops out. Fortunately, we are still seeing mass production in 35 mm, and with the recent resurgence of the analog industry, we are not seeing the end of film photography.Nikon’s reputation for incredible quality is well-deserved, and the 1980s saw them produce some of the most durable and dependable electronic cameras ever. Another brilliant article – I owned the canon (loved it) – I do have a serious complaint about your site, and I feel every one who finds it should be warned.

The equivalent machines ( the Canon Sure Shot WP-1 or AS-6, and the Minolta Weathermatic 35, and the Pentax 90-WR, respectively), either aren’t truly submersible or feature less-worthy lenses, bulkier bodies, or clumsy controls. Once you have loaded the film, close the back-door and press shutter speed to hear if the film has been captured. All there’s to do is open the door by pushing down the toggle on the back next to the window to the left of the date back, placing your roll into the chamber, and stretching its leader to fit into the “Film Tip” marker on the opposite side. The all-weather capability of the L35AW means that all of these well-executed designs and features are housed in a go-anywhere body. Had I been in the market in 1987 for an easy to use point and shoot for family snapshots, I think this camera would have been at or near the top of my want list. This may sound daft, but in practice this works really well – and one huge benefit over most of the other point-and-shoots is: you will never flash people by accident because you forgot to turn it off – you will most definitely notice the Pikaichi’s flash popping up (*TSCHAKKK! The body had a slightly larger hand grip on the photographer’s right side and the body was covered with a grippier rubberized material making it easier to use one handed. This methodology lends itself perfectly to the “focus and recompose” method of shooting, in which the desired subject is centralized, the shutter release half-pressed, and then composition achieved before finally pressing the shutter release button completely.

The Fujica DL100 is also a nice camera, but it does not have the same lens, so does not stack up for my part. It’s okay if we don’t totally understand this kind of dark magic, because it just works brilliantly. What is nice about the third version is that the automatic flash can be cancelled just by pushing a button, it also has ‘macro’ (70cm) and the autofocus has many more steps then the original.
