Colors are vibrant and saturated while still looking natural, from the greens of leaves to the blues of water. The excellent contrast and color make the picture look downright lifelike. Fine details like fur and bark are crisp and clear, and can be easily discerned whether they’re in bright sunlight or dark shade. The brightness boost is easily the big headline here – brightness has always been the one key weakness of OLED TVs, and Sony's sets in particular never really sought to push that in the past. We also measured the brightness in the 'Vivid' Picture Mode. It reached 777 nits in the Real Scene Highlight and 976 nits in the 10% window.In almost all other aspects both sets were very close to each other for colour accuracy and cinematic prowess, with the slightly brighter overall Panasonic edging things slightly with HDR in my opinion, but the Sony slightly stronger in image processing and motion. The maximum number of colors, which the display is able to reproduce, depends on the type of the panel in use and color enhancing technologies like FRC. Speakers are usually a perfunctory aspect of a TV, typcially a set of downward-firing drivers a handful of watts each to provide enough sound to easily hear what you’re watching. Sony put more thought than this into the A90J’s XR Sound system, combining conventional drivers with actuators mounted behind the screen. The TV features a pair of 10-watt actuators for higher frequencies and a pair of 20-watt drivers for lower frequencies, for more audio power than typical TVs. The effect is not as impressive as the XR’s picture processing is, but it’s certainly worthwhile. The sound quality from the Acoustic Surface Audio+ is still superb on the A90J with sound quality that will rival the use of a mid-range soundbar (without a subwoofer). The effect of sound coming directly from the centre of the screen adds to the experience and with the use of high-quality woofers and the screen actuators vibrating the rest of the panel to turn it into a 65-inch speaker, is still revolutionary in the OLED TV market. It’s well worth noting, too, that the heat dissipation ‘layer’ of the new A90J panel should mean you can enjoy the screen’s extra brightness without having to worry about it being any more susceptible to permanent image retention in areas of static image content, such as channel logos and game HUDs. The new XR processing doesn’t restrict its hefty brainpower to picture quality. It also joins forces with Sony’s Acoustic Surface technology, where the screen actually functions as the set’s speakers, to place sound effects more accurately, so that they have a more effective balance in the mix, and appear to be coming from the area of the screen that matches the position of the object making the sound.
