Dungeons & Dragons was practically doomed from the start. Adapting a novel, comicbook or television series for the big screen affords a filmmaker a foundation of established characters and stories. Adapting a sprawling fantasy role-playing game is another matter entirely, particularly when the game in question encourages players to create their own heroes, forge their own adventures and craft their own unique experiences.
