About this deal

And then it did. Winning the 2001 Whitbread Book of the Year Award with The Amber Spyglass made more difference than anything else to my publishers’ ability to sell gratifyingly large quantities of my books, and I remain profoundly grateful. I said at the time that I hoped children’s books could now become part of the general conversation about books, but I’m not sure that they have, except in one respect: the financial one. When it became clear that children’s books could sell in large numbers and make lots of money, publishers were keen to entice celebrities of varied kinds and talents to put their names to a children’s book or several, and singers, comedians and sports stars hastened to sign the contracts they were offered. What could they lose? It was only a children’s book, after all; it couldn’t be very hard to write. Lyra, Iorek, and Roger travel to Svalbard, where Asriel has continued his Dust research in exile. He tells Lyra that the Church believes Dust is the basis of sin, and plans to visit the other universes and destroy its source. He severs Roger from his dæmon, killing him and releasing enough energy to create an opening to a parallel universe. Lyra resolves to stop Asriel and discover the source of Dust for herself. Journey to the frozen North with Mila and her sisters in The Way Past Winter by Kiran Millward Hargrave. Can they find their stolen brother? You will be spellbound by their whirlwind adventures.

The Imagination chamber is an absolutely tiny novellette not worth spending money on and with barely enough information to give you anything to latch onto. Each scene is one or two sentences giving some sort of detail about characters or settings from the world of HDM. The only valuable or interesting piece of new information was that Will Parry goes on to study Medicine at university which I thought was a really nice detail. Everything else was superfluous. I think it was this concept that led to the creation of The Imagination Chamber and, unfortunately, the reality falls far short of the dream. Filled with tiny thoughts and ideas, featuring characters from His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust, the book itself may have been more appealing if presented as a notebook with pictures and doodles and scribbles- instead it resembles a hymnal - and expects the reader to treat it as such.

The introduction- indeed the longest piece of text in the book - provides a comparison with ‘cloud chambers’ and magical concepts for stories and characters that drift in and out of writers minds. It even ascribes a certain spirituality to this idea. The magic of the unobserved character. Dawtrey, Adam (13 March 2008). " 'Compass' spins foreign frenzy". Penske Media Corporation . They don’t really illuminate us to hidden secrets we’ve been dying to know. It really is just a collection of small excerpts wrapped up as a collection of ‘Cosmic Rays’ or ‘Imaginations’ from the author’s mind. Pullman followed the trilogy with three novellas set in the Northern Lights universe: Lyra's Oxford (2003), Once Upon a Time in the North (2008), and Serpentine (2020). La Belle Sauvage, the first book in a new trilogy titled The Book of Dust, was published on 19 October 2017; the second book of the new trilogy, The Secret Commonwealth, was published in October 2019. Both are set in the same universe as Northern Lights. The story begins on a cold winter's night in 1970 whereby two art collectors nestle in front of a fire in a room of a prestigious Oxford college discussing two strange items - a portrait of a young woman and a bronze sculpture of a monkey. If these begin to ring a bell, it is because they are linked to one of the series' sinister characters, Mrs Coulter.

However, each of the scenes don’t so much read as scenes that we’re waiting out of sight but instead tiny scenes that were rejected in favour of superior material that then was included in the novels. Many are a mere two or three sentences long.

Philip Pullman likes the metaphor of a cloud chamber, in which “the passage of charged particles, or cosmic rays” are made visible; he believes his mind “has become accustomed to working like a cloud chamber, in which minute particles charged with story can find something to condense around them and make them visible for a fleeting moment.” Meanwhile, Taran Marathu’s Summoner series, The Novicebeing the first, combines traditional fantasy elements, such as elves and dwarves, with the story of a boy with a demon that is both friend and weapon. Epic and gripping, this is a must-read.

In Northern Lights, the story takes place in a world with some similarities to our own: dress-style resembles that of the UK's Edwardian era; the technology does not include cars or fixed-wing aircraft, but zeppelins feature as a mode of transport. The first volume, Northern Lights, won the Carnegie Medal for children's fiction in the UK in 1995. [19] In 2007, the judges of the CILIP Carnegie Medal for children's literature selected it as one of the ten most important children's novels of the previous 70 years.
