These small Synthetic Tugs are great for building drive in any dog, also a good size for smaller dogs that will play tug, or would like to! You must use a flirt pole mindfully. While it is a great dog exercise toy for playtime, there are rules to follow, just like with tug of war.

Never attach a hard or heavy lure to the bungee cord. If your dog releases it with the cord stretched, you will have a dangerous projectile flying towards you. As I haven’t had a puppy in 25 yrs, I completely underestimated how active one is and how inactive I am! I’m a disabled veteran and I try to exercise but still, my exercise is very low impact stuff and it just wasn’t enough for a growing dog and that led to problems. A flirt pole encourages a dog to jump, lunge, leap and chase the lure and you don’t need a lot of space to make this happen. So flirt poles are the perfect way to help your dog burn energy even in a small area. How to Use a Flirt Pole Regular use of a flirt pole will naturally improve the physical condition of your dog. The act of jumping, chasing, and, leaping will build your dog’s hind muscles and improve their core strength. #4 – Flirt Poles Improve Cognitive Abilities The toys at the end of the rope usually have a squeaker and mimic small animals, which triggers the dog’s natural prey drive.

What is a Flirt Pole

If creating a homemade flirt pole, secure the toy onto the end very well. Terriers are known for their determination to hold on, so you don’t want the toy falling off. The other great thing about the whips is that they are constructed as one solid piece from tip to handle, so they are extremely durable and can take a lot of force. This is my second attempt at making a flirt pole for my dogs, and it’s a roaring success! But the first time – not so much! A major difference between the two tools is human involvement. If your dog isn’t a self-led player — meaning if he wants to play, he expects you to be involved — then a spring pole may sit untouched. Flirt poles are better for the pup who wants their owner involved in play. Flirt Pole DIY: Make Your Own! Take it on the road! Ask for it at different times and in different environments, until you notice he starts to look at you often.

Let your dog catch the lure every now and again — dogs gain satisfaction from catching their “prey” and will lose interest if it’s too difficult to catch the lure. Allow your pup to play out his instincts and kill-shake that dastardly squirrel plush. Dog’s love the challenge because it’s fun and the jumping is what builds up the muscles of the hind legs. How often should my dog and I use the flirt pole? Again, if you need some help with impulse control, flirt poles are an amazing tool! FLIRT POLES AS A TOY FOR DOGS WITH HIGH PREY DRIVE German Shepherds are high-energy dogs that need an outlet for all that energy. A flirt pole is a great way to give your pup the exercise they need while also bonding with them. This flirt pole is also made with relatively heavy-duty components, making it a good choice for big-and-strong breeds, as well as tiny terriers and other small dogs with insane prey drives.

Does a Flirt Pole increase prey drive

A flirt pole will help to teach them the needed impulse control and rules and boundaries. It will also give them an outlet for this natural drive. You have control over the flirt pole which you don’t have over a cat or squirrel. You can build up to a strong leave it, down-stay with prey distraction, and chasing only on a release cue.

The research team at Train Your GSD is made up of passionate pet owners that endure hours researching products for their own pets. Make sure you warm up your dog first to minimise the risk of injuries — this might involve a walk or gentle game to increase the heart rate and get the muscles ready for more energetic action. Equally, remember to warm down afterwards — scent games can be good as these will involve gentle movement and can help bring your dog down from the adrenalin high he will experience during the flirt pole activity. ● Preparation Try to keep the flirt pole low to the ground so you don’t encourage too much jumping and make sure to allow the dog to catch the toy on the end too. ‘Misses’ or not catching the toy can build motivation for the game but you do not want your dog to lose interest completely.Flirt pole dog toys really capitalize on a pup’s prey drive, encouraging them to chase the toy at the end of the lure as it swings around. This is an important cue which tells your dog he can finish whatever you are currently asking him to do. Commonly used cue words are ‘Free’, ‘Release’, ‘Go’, or ‘OK’. Again, practise this in many different scenarios. It’s a good one to remember to say after you’ve asked for a wait or sit, to tell your dog he can now move through the door, or eat his dinner. The Dewonch Store Interactive Flirt Pole Toy is a close runner-up to the Squishy Face Studio Flirt Pole V2. Anyone with a large dog, like a pitbull or GSD, knows that finding durable toys can be a challenge!

In doing so, we develop relationships with manufacturers to ask about product development, industry changes, and gain first-hand experience using many of the products we recommend. Once it is ready, your next task is to introduce the spring pole to your dog. The best way that works for me is to play the tug games first with my Pit Bull and gradually raise the height of the rope. In this way, your dog will slowly learn the concept of gripping. Have you ever looked at a cat’s feather toy and thought “man, I wish that was for a dog?” Well, I have great news for you — somebody else thought that too, and it turned out to be a great idea. Being able to work on your dog’s response to commands while in a high arousal state — but in a controlled environment — is incredibly helpful! Flirt Pole Rules

Best ways to recover after a flirt pole workout:

Thread the cord through the washers at the end of the pipe. Then knot the cord. Use a lighter to melt the edge of the cord to prevent fraying. The washers are used as a stopper to keep the cord from running through. Step #4 Flirt poles for dogs, not unlike cat feather teasers, are comprised of a handle, a pole, a cord, and a toy or lure that resembles a prey animal. Make sure when using the Flirt Pole that you keep your dog on soft ground such as grass or sand. Do not use the Flirt Pole on concrete as it can easily injure your dog! The second thing your dog will learn is to let go of the toy at the end of the flirt pole. Some dogs will have trouble with that, especially in the beginning. However, ensure you don’t allow them to continue playing until they willingly let go of the toy. 3. Keep it low Keep the lure close to the ground. When the toy is flying through the air dogs may jump too high, land poorly, and harm themselves. The lure is also less interesting if it isn’t skittering through the grass like prey! Swing the cord around no more than a foot above ground level.
