Description

The ratio between the horizontal and the vertical side of the display. Some of the standard and widely used aspect ratios are 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 16:10. Last year, Philips moved to the MediaTek MT5895 SoC which is also found in this year's OLED807. Philips refers to it as MT9970B but it is more or less the same SoC found in Sony's Android TVs / Google TVs with similar HDMI 2.1 features. CPU/GPU performance is decent but cannot match an external box such as Nvidia Shield and is not close to matching Apple TV 4K. Gaming has not taken off on the Android TV platform so most users will most likely find it good enough for streaming and general use. Sound is handled by 20W twin downward-firing speakers, and there's the option of a matching 3.1 Dolby Atmos soundbar(B8507). The 8807 is available in six sizes including an 86-inch whopper, making this model the largest Philips TV to date. The NTSC (1953) color space is introduced in 1953 by the FCC with the appearance of color television and has a wider gamut than the sRGB.

It offers strong HDR support (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision) but gaming features seem to have taken a hit. HDMI 2.1 is present but there's no eARC or Auto Low Latency Mode. What's more, resolution maxes out at 4K@60Hz so games won't run as smoothly as they might (if played at 4K@120Hz). OLED EX (anacronymof 'Evolution' and 'eXperience') uses deuterium gas and proprietary algorithm-based ‘EX Technology’ to boost brightness by predicting the usage amount of each individual diode based on your viewing habits. This apparently enables the screen to 'more accurately express the details and colours of the video content being played'. The dynamic contrast shows the ratio between the brightest and the darkest color, which the display can reproduce over time, for example, in the course of playing a video. New improved Four-sided Ambilight system with increased colour detail and accuracy for a totally immersive viewing experience. If you're after something cheap 'n' cheerful for a kitchen counter, the 5537 could be one to consider.Information about the number of pixels on the horizontal and vertical side of the screen. A higher resolution allows the display of a more detailed and of higher quality image. TP Vision is rising to that challenge in 2022 by introducing a wide series of performance improvements to ensure that the new OLED807 Ambilight series retains the previous model’s position as the specialist reviewer’s favourite TV. Considering that Philips was already producing five-star OLED TVs that were the choice of many connoisseurs over the better-known options from LG – including the Philips OLED936– the lengthy list of changes here has us thinking that the Philips OLED807 could be the TV dark horse of 2022.

Philips created 'The One' TV in 2019, pitching it as a mid-range model for mainstream TV buyers who want a decent, future-proof set at an affordable price. While flagship sets with discrete speaker systems will sound even better, for a step-down model the A80L sounds very impressive. This should be a strong consideration for anyone with this sort of budget who is determined not to combine their new TV with a dedicated sound system. We could spend a good few thousand words next on the myriad picture adjustments provided within Philips convoluted menu system. It really does feel like Philips has given you control over, well, everything. For the sake of everyone’s sanity, though, we’ll limit ourselves to saying that while enthusiasts may embrace and enjoy exploring the huge range of adjustments the 55OLED807 carries, it can all be a bit intimidating to more regular folk. The answer is Philips, which has just announced its OLED807 TV range for 2022. Coming in 48-, 55-, 65- and 77-inch sizes, the TV features the new EX panel and also benefits from the latest 6th Gen P5 AI picture processing suite, improved Ambilight technology, IMAX Enhanced compatibility and gaming enhancements. The 2.1-channel sound setup in the OLED807 does not benefit - directly, anyway - from Philips’ successful working relationship with UK hi-fi brand Bowers & Wilkins. That doesn’t stop it from sounding seriously good, though.

If you have the space for a 77-inch TV and want a wonderfully immersive OLED that doesn’t require you to remortgage your house, the LG OLED77C2 is the one to get. The 6th Gen P5 AI also allows users to toggle between Eye Care, Dark Detail Optimization or Colour Temperature Optimization modes. The company's 2022 OLED TVs also get a new version of AI Auto Film Mode, which provides seven smart picture modes including Filmmaker Mode. A new version of AI Auto Film Mode expands the number of smart picture modes from the original two to seven when movie content is detected, giving the viewer more control over how they’d like their film experience to look - these options still include Filmmaker Mode. Picture quality: In action, the 48-inch C3 delivers precisely the sort of bold and brassy picture presentation we’ve come to expect from this year’s C-series models. Brilliantly bright and punchy one second, subtle and considered the next, the C3 delivers precisely what's required at all times. Ambilight is a proprietary Philips technology that extends the onscreen action onto the wall around the TV in the form of coloured light. Not only does it look fabulous, it increases perceived contrast and draws the eye more effectively into the action. If you can't tell, we're big fans. However, please note that the 48-inch OLED807 won't be able to match the same highs as this, because the panel can't get as bright at this size (it's the same for all 48-inch OLEDs) – this brightness applies to the 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch models. The connectivity is good, although of the four HDMI inputs only two are full bandwidth 48Gbits/sec. While all of the HDMI inputs support 4K/60Hz, HDR10, HLG, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and ARC, only the two HDMI 2.1 ports handle 4K/120Hz, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), plus one also supports eARC.

The OLED807 has two extra drivers over the OLED806 it replaces, resulting in a 4.1 system rated to a claimed, impressive-sounding 70W in total. And the TV does actually sound pretty impressive, as long as you avoid the default Entertainment setting, which adds a slightly synthetic edge to some sounds and seems to exaggerate bass to a degree that makes voices sound a bit unnatural. Philips’ tone mapping is clever enough to ensure that even the new, more intense HDR highlights don’t succumb to clipping (loss of subtle shading detail). In fact, the extra 100 nits or so more of native brightness the OLED807 finds on a white HDR window actually makes clipping less rather than more likely to occur. Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. Value for money:The A95L is a super-premium TV with a price to match. It will likely come down a bit in time, but we don't expect the A95L to drop as low as rivals such as the G3. It is much better than these rivals, though, and worth paying for if you can afford it.

The 6th Gen P5 AI will allow viewers to prioritise the system by selecting either Eye Care, Dark Detail Optimization or Colour Temperature Optimization options. Android App offerings vary per country. For more details please visit your local Google Play Store. Even against other 42-inch OLEDs that have the same inherent picture traits, the C3 comes out on top. This is a bold, impactful TV that delivers images with superb solidity and dynamism, but it's also very consistent and never makes you aware of the picture processing in play. It's also an absolute doddle to get looking its best – just use Dolby Vision Cinema Home for Dolby Vision content and Filmmaker Mode for pretty much everything else and you're pretty much sorted (though do by all means tweak further to taste). The extra contrast afforded by the brighter highlights helps to reinforce edges and textures, giving everything an even more solid and three-dimensional appearance, yet this is also masterfully combined with an even greater degree of subtlety. The lights shining on a tiled wall reveal all sorts of subtle shades on the A95L, and as Peter peers into a bottle in Mother Barnabus's office, the little ship inside is resolved with fabulous fine detail and excellent solidity. The new chip boasts the company's most advanced Ambient Intelligence – tech that monitors the ambient light level within the room and continually adjusts brightness, gamma and colour in real time to ensure that all content looks its best at all times.
