Microfiber Cloth– If you or anyone in your house wears glasses, chances are you have microfiber cloths on hand – don’t use regular cloth or tissue. This is the most recommended camera lens cleaner cloth. Because Clear Care’s Cleaning & Disinfecting Solution is hydrogen peroxide-based, it may be a suitable choice for those who find multipurpose solutions irritating. The solution is also preservative-free, to further cut down on irritation. You’ve paid a lot of money for those glasses, so take the time and consideration to clean them properly. Know what materials your glasses are made of and the recommended way to clean them before you start. Homemade Eyeglass Cleaner Recipes Zeiss Wipes are ideal and perfectly safe for cleaning camera lenses. These have been made specifically for cleaning camera products. Turkey Baster– That Thanksgiving turkey baster will get more use than just one day a year! Use it to puff clean air across the surface of your lens to remove large particles of dirt and dust.

One of the best steps in caring for your lenses is taking preventative measures and adopting some good care habits. It’s important not to reuse or top off hydrogen peroxide solution after it has been neutralized. Once the solution is neutralized, it has lost its disinfecting power. In 2018 a study was performed by Hochschule Furtwangen University in Germany to investigate the bacterial levels on spectacles and analyse the efficacy of four different cleaning methods to reduce microbial loads. The cleaning methods tested were moist alcohol and alcohol-free lens cleaning wipes, dry tissue, and dry microfabric cloth. Take the damp lens cleaning tissue in your other hand and gently wipe across the lens surface. Use a side to side motion rather than a spiralling motion if possible. The final step is to wipe the lens. This will clean it of any smears/smudges not removed by the blower and brush. Lens Tissues– Regular tissues leave fibres all over the place. Special lens cleaning tissues have a tight weave of fibres that don’t fragment. I used CURA Micro Wiper papers. These are also highly recommended for camera lens repair too. The carbon tip can be ‘recharged’ by rubbing it against the inside of its protective cover and should be good for around 500 cleans. The other end of the pen houses a retractable brush - useful for an initial sweep if your lens is particularly dusty.

As you’ve removed any hint of dust and grime, you can use the microfiber cleaning cloth in a left-to-right motion or a circular one. Step 6: Clean The Rear Element If you have dropped your glasses, or otherwise gotten them dirty or gritty, you don’t want to start rubbing them. You could end up scratching the lenses and making the situation worse. In this case, washing with a soapy water mixture is the answer. Have your lens facing upwards and use very gentle sweeping actions from one side of the lens to the other. Before you even touch a cloth or lens tissues, you need to use a blower to remove the loose dust and debris from the lens glass.Mobile phone screens attract dust quite easily, and this can make it difficult to see and work effectively. These items are also touched regularly, and it’s important to clean them on a regular basis to remove smudges and prevent the possible spread of germs. The easiest and safest way to clean your digital devices is with a wipe specially designed for screens. ZEISS Smartphone Wipes are specially designed and independently tested to provide safe and effective cleaning for your smartphone. A camera service centre can polish a lens to remove minor scratches. However, this will also remove any special coatings applied by the camera manufacturer. Also, avoid cloth that has been dried with fabric softener, it can leave a film on your glasses and cause smudging. The best choice is to use a microfiber cloth, 100% cotton cloth, or an eyeglass cleaning cloth made specifically for that purpose. If you find that there’s condensation or moisture inside your lens – all is not lost. There are a couple of simple ways to get rid of moisture: This should only be on rare occasions of dire necessity. It’s important to remember that regular breathing on a camera lens can contribute to fungus growth. If fungus gets inside the lens barrel, then you've got a real cleaning job on your hands!

Large Eye-Dropper– A large eye-dropper can work in the same way as a turkey baster to blow away dust and debris. Of the four methods tested, moist lens cleaning wipes showed the most germ reduction at ≥99% (a vast reduction). 1

The gentle formulation is free from alcohol, ammonia and fragrances but still cleans all devices thoroughly. Avoid using clothes to clean camera lenses, there's a chance that the fibres can create micro-scratches. Hold the blower a few centimetres away so that you don't hit the lens with it, and give it a good squeeze. The air should gush out nice and fast!
