Description

AmpliFi HD System (AFI-HD): This kit includes a router base station and two wireless super mesh points for more WiFi coverage throughout your home. The update process started, but then, again, there was an "Unable to locate device" error. As before, there is a big yellow button offering to connect me with the non-existing Wi-Fi network AFi-P-HD-365742. The AmpliFi MeshPoint can be reset by holding a paperclip into the reset hole located on the left hand side of the MeshPoint itself. Make sure the MeshPoint is plugged in and hold the paperclip in for 10 seconds or until a load tone is output. Physical Reset for Alien Router Tap the toggle to "Pause Internet on all devices". This will stop the internet access of all devices seen on the list. Leaving the Ethernet cable plugged in between the two components (AmpliFi router and modem), power them both off completely. Unplugging them from their power supply is a good method.

The Amplifi HD is an excellent wireless router with range extenders that will look good in almost anyone’s house thanks to an excellent design that Apple’s own Jony Ive would surely approve of. In my case, the mesh point was using the 2.4GHz band to communicate with the router, as that was the only option. Had the router been dual-band, I could have chosen either frequency band. Low mesh point signal may cause stability issues. To view the signal of your mesh point launch the AmpliFi app and select the mesh point icon displayed. Note To add the AmpliFi router in bridge mode instead of a network extender, please refer to this article. The Alien product line does not support third party mode.

Plug and Play Setup

You can scan the QR code on the devices using the camera of your smartphone or tablet to view the MAC ID. Each Ethernet port on AmpliFi will be displayed here. Highlighted means the port is active, whereas grayed-out means nothing is currently plugged into that port. This is pretty decent performance for such a small router with no external antennae, and shows how you don’t necessarily have to have a big bulky router in the vein of the Linksys WRT32X to get good coverage. Ensure the MeshPoint you wish to add is plugged in and powered on: the three middle LED lights on the AmpliFi HD MeshPoint should be flashing. The LCD of the AmpliFi device should be showing ready for setup.

If your mesh point(s) have disconnected themselves from your router, the pairing protocol might need to be realigned between the mesh points and the router. The troubleshooting steps are different for mesh points that came with the router in the AmpliFi HD kit (AFI-HD) for example and the mesh points that are sold separately (AFI-P-HD). Please find the troubleshooting steps for each type of mesh point below. This article applies to all our product lines (AmpliFi HD, Instant, Gamer and Alien lines). One of my favorites is the 5 small blue LED lights on the mesh point itself. After initial configuration, these dots indicate the strength of the signal between the mesh point and the router. This makes moving the mesh point to improve the signal as easy as easy could be. As for fiddling with positioning, the signal strength indicator on the mesh points make this easy, as noted earlier. That said, even when my speeds were slow, the mesh point had 5 blue dots (best signal strength). I mention this in part because AmpliFi is that rare mesh system that does not self-update — a downside inherited by the stand-alone mesh points. Not only does the documentation fail to mention the need for firmware updates, but none of the articles I have read about using AmpliFi devices mention it either.

A stylish competitor to Google Wifi

Remote control requires either a Facebook or Google account; Ubiquiti does not support old-school Dynamic DNS (DDNS). Remote access can be very useful for a router, not so much for a repeater. I skipped it.

Conclusions: The AmpliFi HD Mesh Point is a cool device that can be used to expand Wi-Fi coverage within a house that might have some dead spots, whether you’re using an existing wireless mesh system or have an older Wi-Fi router. The device isn’t meant to boost speeds in those areas, unless you formerly had such a weak signal that speeds were very slow to begin with (or non-existent).WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) allows users to easily connect devices (like wireless printers and wireless cameras for example) that support WPS to the AmpliFi system. WPS can be enabled temporarily via the AmpliFi app or the webUI, take a look below: Enabling WPS on the AmpliFi mobile app Scroll down to the RouterAdditional SSID section and enable additional band by tapping on the toggle button for each broadcast you would like to create. Now, my Android device is using the 5GHz band to communicate with the mesh point, as is the iPad in the other room. And the ISP speed test was better than I could have hoped for at 52 Mbps down. Google requires all apps to request users to grant Location permissions when performing discovery-related tasks. The AmpliFi app needs to request Location permission so your AmpliFi can be discovered by WiFi SSID (during setup), in network (when already set up) or when adding it in 3rd party mode via Bluetooth. The AmpliFi line is targeted at consumers, and industry-wide (not just Ubiquiti) vendors tend not to create useful documentation for consumers. Even if there is documentation initially, it is often abandoned and never updated.
