About this deal

The Silhouette Cameo 4 is the mightiest of Silhouette's cutting machines. It's got a classic 12-inch cutting width and 3mm clearance. As standard the Cameo 4 can cut to 10ft without using a guide mat, with the roll-feeder attached this can go up to 140ft. As with Maker 3 these lengths are only for vinyl cutting. A few people have been asking about the capabilities of the Silhouette Cameo that I have been using on my Wainfleet thread to help my scratchbuilding efforts and whether it would be right for them or for a club to buy. I can’t answer that, but I thought that this thread would help people decide if its right for them (and worth the outlay) while helping to provide information specifically for modellers. Generally Cricut machines are easier to use than Silhouette machines, and they have a larger ecosystem of tools, accessories and associated machines – such as the Cricut EasyPress 2 and Cricut Mug Press. Note: the Silhouette is more customisable, with on-device settings, making it, in the long run, a machine pros love. What is the most recent Silhouette machine? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79025-a-guide-to-using-the-silhouette-cameo-cutter/?p=1565555

If your answer is “yes”, then the Curio is the Silhouette die cutter for you. This is the only machine that can access the emboss, deboss, stipple and etch features in the Silhouette Studio software. The machine's cutting pressure ensures it can slice through most materials from paper to wood and even leather. Engraving and embossing can be achieved, and it can perform delicate pen work. In our Cricut Maker 3 review we found this to be one of the best cutting machines we've used to date, and easily a step up from past Cricuts.

Includes an Autodetect Autoblade, a 12 inch cutting mat, four blade adapters, a one-month Silhouette Design Store subscription, 100 free digital designs, a power cable, a USB cable and a UK plug OK, now you’ve decided whether you want a Curio or Cameo (or both!), you might want to think about whether the Cameo or Portrait is the right Silhouette die cutter for you.

Cricut, by contrast, offers a more expansive range of tools, 13 in total compared to Silhouette's five. You can use the Rotary Blade, Knife Blade, Scoring Wheels, Foil Transfer Tool, and more when you buy them as part of a bundle or direct from the Cricut store. The machine comes with a Premium Fine Point Blade as standard. (Read our guide to the best Cricut blades for more details.) The blades used in the Cameo 4 Pro are chipped which means the machine will automatically detect what type of blade has been inserted into it. Once the machine has recognised the blade it will automatically send this information through to Silhouette Studio and update the software accordingly.
