It’s no surprise that people are looking for more environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic straws. One of these alternatives is bamboo straws. Bamboo straws are made out of natural materials and can be used over and over again, making them a great alternative to single-use plastics like plastic straws. Their range of organic superfoods, teas and proteins use whole foods and / or selected botanicals to support optimum health and wellbeing.

Bamboo straws are also great for those who have wheat allergies as they do not contain any traces of gluten. Plastic bottles also have a far lower production footprint than metal bottles ( stainless steel and aluminum), because of the energy requirements to process metal ores and fabricate metal There are many ways that Jungle Straws can help to make your big day more sustainable. We can provide a number of alternative to plastic solutions, including beautifully engraved custom bamboo straws for weddings, zero waste bamboo cutlery sets and authentic coconut bowls, as well as catering for large events and social occasions such as festivals, concerts and corporate celebrations.

Bamboo Straws

Bamboo trees grow in abundance and attain full maturity within three to five years, making bamboo straws completely sustainable and compostable. Since bamboo straws are produced from a natural product, they are beneficial and harmless to the environment. Bamboo is fully sustainable, strong, naturally antibacterial and resistant to mould and mildew. It is essential in the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It grows to full height in under five years and can be harvested easily. Today’s top exporter of bamboo is Vietnam. Bamboo is grown, dried and cut without chemicals or pesticides. Bamboo is a renewable resource and does not require irrigation or fertilizer to grow. It can be grown in both tropical and temperate climates making it easily accessible across the world. Borosilicate glass straws are usually the best option, as they are generally less prone to breaking, and seem to be better insulated against hot and cold beverages (greenliving.lovetoknow.com).

theotherstraw bamboo straws are made from organic bamboo in Vietnam and are a great eco friendly alternative to plastic straws. They break down very slowly and can make their way through our food systems as they are ingested by fish, birds, turtles, etc. This is especially concerning because plastics never fully degrade- instead, they just become smaller pieces of plastic called microplastics which make up the majority of ocean pollution today.

Where are the straws from?

These high-quality, food-grade bamboo straws are a fun and unique way to excite any drinking experience!

We advise people to boil their bamboo straws in a little salt and vinegar before using them for the first time. This helps to remove any residue, or remove any ‘woody’ aroma. A problem with paper as a material though is that it generally uses a lot of water, and much more energy than plastic in the production phase.

Polishing the bamboo straws

Should your straws be hand made, these require washing in soapy water, rinsing and drying immediately. Why are There Short and Tall Drinking Straws? To ensure the bamboo straws compost faster, ensure they have absorbed excess moisture or the compost bin is fairly wet. You should keep any form of plastic or unsustainable product away from the compost pile, it can ruin the entire pile, and rather than fertilizing the soil, it causes damage instead. For short use new straws – plastic straws may be the best eco option (because they are cheap and have a lower production and transport footprint). They certainly are! Jungle straws are plant based, fully compostable and can be easily recycled. When you have finished with them, simply put them into a recycling or compost bin, or get creative! Our personal favourite is to use them as plant stands or give them to the kids for homework and craft projects! We do however, strongly advise against using them as pea-shooters!
