Description

Ahead of each DIY NAS build comes lots of time researching components’ specifications and prices. The two components I wind up putting the most amount of time and energy into researching are the motherboard and the case. In the eight years that I’ve been researching and building DIY NAS machines, I’m confident that I’ve seen or glanced at nearly every single case that meets the above criteria. What are your words of wisdom? And also what are your words of CONFIDENCE… That you can SUPER SAFELY proceed past all those BRIGHT RED alerts about LOSING DATA if you proceed.

Bays, 2x PCIe 4 M.2 NVMe 2280, PCIe Gen 4×16 Upgrade Slot, Intel Core 12th Gen i5/i7/i9 CPU, 16-64GB DDR4 Memory, 2.5Gbe Port, 10Gb x2 Prots (Intel i9 Version), KVM, ZFS or EXT4 Setup, 3-5yr Warranty QVR Pro is plenty good enough for me, don’t need QVR Elite, but it needs more horse than a TS-873; mine now runs well on a TVS-EC1080+. Therefore, I always used to edit videos off my local SSD drive. And sometimes over the network using macOS's built-in file sharing. But as my video workflow matures, I find myself needing a central storage solution disconnected from my main workstation.

Bays, 2x M.2 NVMe 2280, Intel N5105 4-Core 2.0-2.9Ghz CPU, 8-16GB Memory, 2x 2.5Gbe Port, 4K HDMI 2.0 Port, USB 3.2 Gen 2 10G, PCIe Gen 3×2 Slot, 3-5yr Warranty The AUDHEID NAS 8-Bay K7 is an excellent choice for an extended NAS in a compact form factor that is ITX compatible. MATX and ATX motherboards are supported, and it has room for up to eight 3.5-inch hot-swap drives for high-end media centers or NAS.

Fractal Design Define R5 is a silent case for building a quiet PC for work or gaming. The case offers a ton of room for all the high-end components including high-end graphics cards and bigger radiators. It can fit eight 3.5-inch hard drives, and two 2.5-inch drives, and has got two 5.25-inch bays. For airflow, you can install up to nine fans, and two 140mm Fractal Design Dynamic GP-14 fans come pre-installed, one at the front and one at the rear. The top of the front panel comes with two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, power & HDD LEDs, and audio ports. A three-speed fan controller is also integrated on the front panel for changing the fan speed manually. For quiet operation, the case comes with sound dampening material installed at the front and other panels. Fractal Design Node 804 ( specs): Is a bit larger but also supports Micro ATX motherboards, which opens up a whole new form factor of potential motherboards to consider. It has internal 8 x 3.5” HDD bays, 2 x 2.5” HDD bays, and it’s very price competitive, which makes it a very attractive option to consider. Fixed the network parameters. The old board had Realtek and e1000 NICs, so the interfaces were named reX, emX etc. New interfaces are Intel igbX type interfaces. Up to 360mm Radiator Support, Sound Dampening Foam/Pads on Panels (Front/Sides), Illuminated USB Ports (White LED), Fan Speed Controller, Cable Routing & Management, Tool-Free Drive Installation, Removable Dust Filters (Front/Bottom), Swing Open Front PanelSome apps (such as the Surveillance Center apps) are long overdue an update in visuals and services The video war really helpful though, will there also be a video regarding the setup (software side)? I’m still hesitant to build my own NAS mostly because I’m not sure how difficult it is to replicate various services offered by synology and qnap (like Synology Drive easily available on PC and Smartphones) and how secure it would be on something like TrueNAS and others To edit footage well, the data not only needs to move fast (1 Gbps barely cuts it for a single stream), it also needs to have very low latency, otherwise Final Cut Pro (my editor of choice) lags quite a bit while scrubbing over dozens of video clips. Measurements: 260(W) x 280(D) x 208(H)mm (10.3 x 8.2 x 11.1 in). Weight 2.65 Kg. Volume 15.14 Litres. Bays: 2x removable 3.5in SATA/SATA II Hard Drive bays (SAS/SATAII compatible, cold swappable); 1x 2.5in SSD/HDD bay.
