In ‘The Dream Weavers’ Erskine explores the Anglo-Saxon concept of the Web of Wyrd, representing the interconnectedness of past, present and future. So the past and present are linked through place and artefacts such as a rare illuminated manuscript and a stone used for scrying and psychometry. Even though quite a long novel it proved highly engaging. I admired Bea’s very down-to-earth approach to the situation though she did sometimes take risks that heightened the tension. A truly compelling and engaging storyline that crosses genres to include historical fiction, a love story set In Ancient Mercia 775 AD, mysticism and timeslip. Our T’nalak was gifted by Nancy Davidson Short, a former Northwest editor for Sunset Magazine. It is assumed that this T’nalak was procured in the mid 1900’s. However, not much evidence is provided by the Burke Museum to establish the precise date when it was acquired, created, or how Short obtained the item. In her obituary, it was noted that her position at Sunset Magazine allowed her to travel to many places across the globe, including China and presumably Southeast Asia where this T’nalak may have crossed her path. Maria Todi has also been documenting T'boli's various cultural traditions, including T'nalak. When we spoke at her school, she explained that these precious textiles were once used as currency, and could even replace cows or water buffalo as dowries at weddings. She said that as the T'boli rapidly assimilated into modern society, the T'nalak, like many of their other traditions, lost its practical value, receding into a purely cultural symbol that is in danger of being forgotten. I love the historical aspect to this novel and the way it’s convincingly intertwined with the modern day characters. The descriptions of the landscapes are very evocative and the historical elements are clearly extensively researched.
