Description

The player can defend themselves by playing another card from their hand either matching the asset or a wild. Now, if you lay down a stamp collection pair, for example, anyone else with a stamp collection card (or wild) can opt to steal the pair from you. It’s funny when it does happen, because mostly the people don’t know the intense value of the thing they just nicked.

To keep the set from being stolen by another player, the best thing you can do is to Cover Your Assets, by creating a new pair from your hand, or by stealing a set from the top of another player’s stack during your next turn. There isn’t a story set up for Grandpa Beck’s Cover Your Assets but if I was to make one up that fits the theme perfectly I would say it is like when a family all start fighting over who gets Nan’s jewels after she has sadly passed on. The first several times playing, I would try to save these valuable wild cards to help in my battles to protect or steal, but most often I lost them (that turn or the next player’s turn or the next).Every time somebody tries to steal assets, whether they're successful or not, that particular set of assets increases in value, making it a bigger target for all the other players. This may go without saying, but Cover Your Assets scores very high on our “let’s play again” game meter. The player challenging must now either show another matching card or a wild (if they want) to continue the challenge.

Hint: you’ll quickly want to cover that bad-boy up because everyone not involved in the challenge is doing the math and might come for it quickly. I’ve covered two, already ( Skull King and the first edition of The Bears and the Bees), and this will make three. I'm not sure what sort of lesson this teaches my kids about how wealth works, but maybe at least they'll get some practice with their addition. I think, generally, that’s Grandpa Beck’s wheelhouse, so this is another solid title in that line, I’d argue. So when you can hide and bury those high-value Gold and Silver cards lower in your pile, you’re doing well.

While you can add more players by combining sets, it is also recommended just to split into multiple groups of up to 6 players each.

Each new set that is created is stacked crosswise on top of the previous set, covering, and protecting, all the sets beneath it. A pair of assets consists of either TWO identical asset cards, or by pairing ONE asset card with ONE wild card (gold and silver) tucked behind it.That means, if it was not your turn and you were challenged and used cards to defend, then after the hard fought battle, you will draw cards to refill your hand.

While kids younger than 8 would be able to make matching pairs of cards in their hand and find matches among other players’ assets, they’re not going to like being stolen from. The stakes are high in this high-energy, competitive, and cut-throat, set-collection card game from Grandpa Beck’s Games! I have found Cover Your Assets to be fun for a short while but not one that I will be rushing back to play over and over again.

Once the last card has been played, players add up the total face value of their cards and mark it on a sheet. The first of which is forming a set by pairing two cards from your hand, pairing a card from your hand and the top card of the discard pile, or pairing cards by using one of the wild cards (silver or gold). The box is already decently small and transportable, or you can just load the cards up into a Quiver or equivalent and take it pretty much wherever you want to go.
