It’s a perfectly nice, functional breakfast for a weekday, and certainly cost-effective, but I can’t help but feel it needs more texture. She hopes Thrifty Kitchen will help us get through the cost of living crisis and help her make a new start.

Her new book Thrifty Kitchen – out in January – pulls together all her low-cost recipes, cooking advice and household lifestyle hacks to help readers eat well and live better for less.Silly section containing home 'hacks' which sound ridiculous at best, dangerous at worst (I now know things have had to be changed in this book due to that). On a usual day to day basis I'm in a luxurious position of not really needing to think much at all about my cooking as I get recipe boxes delivered from either Mindful Chef or Gousto and so it's been useful to have recipes from the book to spark up new ideas. The long-awaited second instalment in Samantha Shannon's Sunday Times and New York Times-bestselling series Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory.

Through the gorgeous recipes and straightforward advice in Thrifty Kitchen, she proves that you don’t need to sacrifice flavour or settle for lacklustre meals when you’re spending less.At a time like this, you really want meals you can make with a few ingredients probably already sitting in your fridge or kitchen cupboard. There was also a lack of creaminess in the final product – something that normally makes a risotto so delicious and moreish. It continues that these hacks come from when Monroe “found herself in extreme circumstances of food poverty and necessity required creative solutions to overcome the obstacles” and that “proper tools should, of course, be used where possible. Monroe has been stalked, strangers have appeared outside her son’s school, maps have appeared on social media detailing where she lives.

There was speculation that this was because, “I earned nigh on a million quid and didn’t want anyone knowing,” she says. I was drinking a lot so I was losing work left, right and centre because I was unreliable and chaotic. I just wanted to put the brakes on for a bit and go, right, I’m going to work normal human hours, spend some quality time with my son and have a quiet time,” she says. She showed us how to survive in the age of austerity by being frugal in the extreme – making meals for 30p, and reusing every leftover. She’s been blogging, tweeting and writing cookbooks for nearly a decade now, giving us genius tips for saving money and reducing food waste, including making soda bread out of sour milk, or fashioning a delicious meal out of broccoli stalks.

What really struck me was how opposite of 'Thrifty' most of them were and how pointless others were. When I got pregnant, it was like the switch flicked and I thought, this isn’t about me any more; this baby needs feeding. Monroe is back with a new book to help us through the cost of living crisis, and help her make a new start.
