Description

Like most cameras on the market, the 622GW features a built-in G-Sensor, which will automatically save footage to the device if it detects a bump or crash. The sensitivity of this can be adjusted via the touchscreen display, but there’s also a handy Parking Mode that will automatically record footage if the G Sensor is activated, even when the camera isn’t drawing power. The 622GW’s sensor is anOmnivision OS08A10, which I’ve never seen before. I’m sure a large part of the credit for quality goes to this sensor, but Nextbase’s claims about tuning the quad-core processor inside have merit as well. This is an unadjusted night capture, and while it’s a little dark, it’s not far off what I saw with the naked eye. The night colors are far more accurate than with any other dash cam I’ve reviewed. The geocode system means drivers can precisely pinpoint a location even if they don't know where they are or don't know the postcode. The GPS alternative means drivers can be found easily even in remote locations. But you'll still need to make the phone call for help. For more serious incidents, there's also EmergencySOS, which works even in those areas where phone signal and internet connectivity are a problem. In our initial review of the Garmin 66W, we pointed out that it is a little frustrating that the default option for video is 1080p Full HD at 60 frames per second, while other options include 1440p with HDR at 30 frames per second, 1080p with HDR at 30 fps, and 720p with HDR at 30 fps.

A Rear Window camera is also available, which attaches to the rear window via a magnetic mount and adhesive fixture (so it doesn't fall off when you slam the boot door). Despite needing an irritatingly long wire trailing through the car (we clip ours into the headlining), we'd opt for this one because it films directly out of the rear window, rather than the cabin too.

Operating temperatures for the 622GW are -22 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Nextbase was kind enough to point out that this is for the entire device, and not the chip temperatures that some vendors provide. I’d mention the vendors, but I’m still investigating the claim. Nextbase warranties the 622GW for one year. If you want the best, this is it What’s the best on a budget: The 322GW is good value for money and has a decent selection of features for the price. Just don’t expect all the bells and whistles. Though 4K UHD (3860 x2160) burns through SD cards in a hurry (roughly four times 1080p), the 622GW’s captures have convinced me that, when done properly—it’s worth it. The detail in the 4K UHD captures is fantastic, the color is wide-gamut and accurate, and the motion compensation is first class. I could go on, but take a gander at the captures below and tell me if you don’t agree. IDG Unfortunately, Nextbase’s dash cam companion app doesn't feel quite as polished as the 622GW. While the interface is generally well designed, it can take a while for video thumbnails to appear and even longer for video clips to buffer.

The usefulness of these features is questionable, with most of these alerts coming in the form of indecipherable bleeps. However, the addition of voice control is good and by uttering the words “Okay Garmin”, you can instruct the camera to save important footage or take a picture, for example. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ Both of these dash cams also have a feature called Emergency SOS, which alerts the emergency services and shares your location if a collision is detected and the driver is unresponsive. To determine this, the system first calls your phone; if you don’t respond, your GPS position will be shared with local emergency services. The system can even be loaded up with your medical history, next of kin and blood type – all key information for first responders. div>
