The three endings that were available on the standard DVD (the fourth is exclusive to this Blu-ray edition -- see below) provide an interesting glimpse into the minds of the filmmakers but don't have an affect on my opinion of the overall film.

Some are in cages, some are strapped to tables, and one is forced to watch endless videos of horrible atrocities. Unlike other genre pictures, such as the flaccid Dawn of the Dead remake, 28 Days Later is actually trying to say something. He does happen to come across a few other survivors, and they band together in an attempt to survive. This is an effectively unsettling dramatic launch, and from there, every step of the way, 28 Days Later doesn't lose its edge.

Resident Evil provided one high-profile entry, and 28 Days Later follows up with another effort in the field. When the infected come at our heroes, they do so with a rabidity that makes them seem much more formidable than the shambling shemps of George Romero’s undead. Several of his films have become touchstones for modern cinema, including Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, and now 28 Days Later, Boyle's take on zombie horror flicks, and in particular the character-driven pieces by George Romero. Invited to spend the night, Selena and Jim privately debate whether they should remain with Frank and Hannah. Detail is the tiniest bit sharper than the DVD, but it's a minor improvement that's an inherent product of the increased resolution.
