Pathways: Not only does Chinshaka anticipate this award will help to set him apart in the competitive landscape of design, but he believes it will provide a solid foundation for building a successful career in his chosen field. Above all, Chinshaka says that the accolade will "serve as a constant reminder of the potential [I] hold and the responsibility [I] bear in contributing meaningfully to the creative landscape beyond the university walls."For many of the student recipients of the Graduate Award 2023, this prestigious accolade has validated the time and effort they invested for their final year of university. According to MA Biodesign graduate, Millicent Sutton, this award is one of the biggest achievements of her creative journey so far. It's been a big learning curve, but my aim was to ensure all the panel members had the resources and support needed for a transparent selection process and to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to thrive." Foundation is widely considered the best preparation for progression to an undergraduate degree in the creative arts in the UK. On this dynamic course, you’ll try different disciplines from across art and design while being supported to fulfil your creative potential and ambitions. My project, Homo/Hetro, is about tension and queerness, some of the foundation projects for me were connected and were explorations of my identity – and more specifically my queer identity. So, within this project I thought that I would do this more overtly, looking into queer British history and art. The key research for the project is Francis Bacon and Leigh Bowery, exploring the themes: seeing/not seeing, queerness, concealment, tension and flamboyancy – experimenting with knitwear to explore these themes.

The Foundation Diploma is designed to prepare students for specialist undergraduate degrees in art and design subjects. It’s a year of exciting projects, new faces and experiences that will inform your future study, career and creative life. If you speak English as an additional language, we encourage you to join one of UAL's language development classes to continue improving your language skills during your studies.
