Mallet finger. Also called baseball finger, mallet finger is an impact injury that affects the tendon that straightens your finger or thumb. The tendon may tear or detach from the finger bone, causing pain, bruising, and swelling. Brie en Croute” proves to be a beautiful ballad, with Wood deploying brushes throughout. The drummer’s sensitivity is matched by his colleagues, with Deats displaying a delicate touch on acoustic piano. The piece has a song like construction and is performed by the core trio, with Kofi sitting out.

I am now writing the second novel in the series, featuring Lottie Parker and a host of credible characters. They are all part of my extended family, you know the kind – people you love one minute and want to kill the next! Almost three decades after the assassination of JFK, “Little Bones” was in synch with the times. It was the same year that Oliver Stone’s documentary JFKprompted passage of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992.

Disc One concludes with “Downfall”, ushered in by the warblings of Deats’ synth. Paterson describes it as one of his simplest compositions, but it’s a piece that his colleagues relished improvising around. The ballad like theme provides the framework for solos from the composer on liquid electric bass and Deats on woozy synth, with Wood deploying brushes throughout. Kofi’s tenor is introduced towards the close, his gently eloquent soloing on an acoustic instrument representing an effective contrast to the sounds of synth and electric bass.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Little Bones, the tenth novel to feature DI Lottie Parker of the Ragmullin Gardai. Hiddenness” features what Paterson describes as “a really dirty groove” and at times there’s an aggressive quality about the piece that has even evoked comparisons with King Crimson! Following an arresting intro featuring the powerful sound of Kofi’s sax a neatly constructed solo drum feature emerges. Deats’ acoustic piano playing has more of an orthodox jazz feel about it and his solo is followed by a more expansive tenor solo from Kofi and the return of that “dirty groove”. Throughout the piece Paterson makes effective use of dynamic contrasts and the tune has proved to be a particularly popular live item. Wow! This is the tenth book in the Lottie Parker series and it’s still as sharp as the first. Patricia Gibney continues to delight with well thought out police procedurals. Lottie is involved in two different investigations - a woman murdered in her own home, her four month old child in the same room; and a missing woman and her four year old boy, who have gone missing separately. There is some weird connection between the two women involving razor blades but Lottie can’t figure out the link. The album commences with the 7/8 groove of “Ury Bop”, a composition based on the Indian folk tale “The Old Woman and the Red Pumpkin”. Introduced by Paterson on bass and with Deats playing Rhodes the piece is infectious and accessible despite the unusual time signature. Kofi connects with a robust tenor solo, followed by Deats, who takes an inventive excursion on Rhodes. DI Lottie Parker has found a soft spot in my heart. This poor woman always has so much going on at the same time. Little Bone was a brilliant story filled with everything we have come to expect from this series. I enjoyed the blind chase and all the detail that makes up this complicated story. I found myself wrapped in the chase and trying to fit the piece together right from the start. I love how this series always has so much going on. It’s a busy read that will keep you up at night. Together they represent the house trio at the widely acclaimed Peggy’s Skylight jazz venue in Nottingham and have played with many leading jazz musicians from the UK and further afield.
