This is certainly one of the most attractive phones availale, with a more striking, cohesive look than either the Sony Xperia Z or the Samsung Galaxy S4. It’s only the slightly aggressive styling that makes this feel like an HTC-designed device, rather than the one that could have slipped out of Apple’s labs. The only downside is that the colours are a little warm, so whites look a little yellow, at least when compared to the Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy S6, for example. This can be quite a common problem with AMOLED panels, but it’s not something I find particularly bothersome on this particular handset. The screen’s peak brightness is also a little low at 347.19cd/m2 when you put it up against its LCD-based rivals, but again this isn’t out of the ordinary for AMOLED display. The HTC One has now been out for a year. Since we originally reviewed the phone, it has been crowned our phone of the year 2013, beating the Google Nexus 5, iPhone 5S and Samsung Galaxy S4. HTC has also added a dash of colour into the phone’s frame, taking inspiration from luxury watches and fine jewellery. It’s a similar idea to what we’ve seen from the HTC Desire Eye, which had an additional band of colour infused directly into the phone’s soft-touch chassis. Here, the same effect has been applied to the One M9, only with metal instead of plastic. The last flagship phone in the HTC One series was the HTC One M9, which was announced and released in 2015. Its successor, the HTC 10, is HTC's 2016 flagship phone; however, it did not use the "One" branding in the name. Its successor, the 2017 HTC U11, did not use the "One" branding either.Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), Upgradeable to Android 5.0 Lollipop It also doesn’t help that the HTC One M9 has exactly the same kind of display as the One M8. Rather increasing the resolution to 2,560 x 1,440, the One M9 has a 5in, 1920 x 1,080 display – where if you want an HTC phone with a higher-end display, you’ll have to go for the newer HTC 10. The HTC One is a looker, and a phone that’s easy to recognise in the ever-expanding sea of mobiles. It’s far more interesting to look at than its top rival the Samsung Galaxy S4. One neat little improvement is that HTC now lets you get rid of the BlinkFeed widget if you like – one of the most common criticisms of the phone when it launched. However, one obvious niggle remains. It sounds tiny, but it’s irritating. It’s far too easy to switch the keyboard into a different language when typing, and we recommend switching to a third-party keyboard as soon as you get hold of the phone.

The HTC One’s body also won’t appreciate rough treatment much. Aluminium feels great on the fingers, but it’s a relatively soft metal that will eventually get scratched by loose change and your car keys. However, after using the phone for weeks without masses of care, its bodywork is still looking good, with only the shiny sides of the body bearing particularly visible scratches. Part of this is down to the way the phones are made. The HTC One has an aluminium frame with plastic inlays, but the Mini and Max look and feel more like plastic phones with some aluminium plates grafted onto them. They are not as classy or immaculate as the phone that inspired them, the HTC One. The One Max in particular looks like a bit of a mess next to it.HTC One wins best new device at Mobile World Congress". betanews.com. 28 Feb 2013. Archived from the original on 2013-03-05 . It might take longer time than expected for booting the device as it has to ready all the apps from the start. It's easy to forget how exciting the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge was. We'd seen the bent screen technology debut the year before in the Galaxy Note Edge, but this was the second iteration and it was vastly improved for the flagship S7 phone.

It wasn't just the bendy screen technology that resonated with us though. The screen was bigger because of that curved tech, and it was just a genuinely well built phone with a beautiful glass design. HTC One (M8), the successor to the 2013 HTC One (M7). What is also interesting – and a bit sad – is that HTC has not quite managed to recreate the spark of genius that resulted in the HTC One in its subsequent phones. There have been two other One-series phones in the range, the HTC One Mini and the HTC One Max, but neither has been quite as good. Unlike the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra it’s not quite a case of a bigger and smaller version of the HTC One. In recent years, even the established names have looked to take a leaf out of the OnePlus playbook, with handsets like the iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S10e making an appearance. It’s a subtle effect, but one that really adds a touch of class to the handset, making it look and feel even more like a premium handset compared to last year’s model. Our review sample was a fetching silver and gold model, but it’s also available in a darker gunmetal grey with mirrored grey side-walls and a gold version with mirrored polished gold side-walls.
