Description

The wax on the fruit is mild enough not to affect your entire compost pile (because people have to come in contact with it too and may eat it) but strong enough to prevent the mold from growing on the surface of the citrus. Say goodbye to the unpredictable weather and hello to a cosy and efficient way to keep your clothes in top condition. A wormery is a closed system entirely reliant on the worms to work: if it becomes too acidic the worms will die, and the contents will sit and stagnate.

A peat-free compost specially formulated for Mediterranean types of plant such as bougainvillea, palm trees, orange trees, lemon trees and lime trees.Citrus are not hardy in Britain, they are best grown in pots outdoors in summer then brought back inside for winter. Maintaining a good, balanced compost pile is key to neutralizing acidity, thus allowing you to use the compost with your soil.

Seed-raised plants can take many years to produce fruit and the fruit quality is usually inferior to that of the parent plant, but it can be fun to try and produce some unexpected results. Occasionally there are concerns about adding citrus peels to compost due to the fact that penicillium molds grow on citrus. In years when repotting is not necessary, remove the top 5cm (2in) of old compost in late spring and replace with fresh compost. As long as you are tending to your compost pile regularly, you could have the final product in as little as four weeks. Bear in mind that this process takes much longer than a hot compost pile would; expect it to take a few months up to a year for your compost to be ready for use. Remove the peel from the citrus fruit, and split up the segments of the fruit before you pop it into your compost. I was unfamiliar with they myth, although I am aware that too much citrus debris piled too high may rot like too much slimy lawn debris. They’re a good source of important nutrients for your compost, and the peels and fruit can all be composted.
