After several attempts at the Nanga Parbat, Aufschnaiter led a small four-man expedition in 1939, including Heinrich Harrer, to the Diamir Face with the aim of finding an easier route to the peak. After Sattler had given up on 10 May, the remaining four entered Tibet crossing the Tsang Chok-la Pass (5,896 metres) on 17 May 1944 and thereafter split into two groups: Harrer and Kopp, Aufschnaiter and Treipel. The spiritual leader was only 11 when he first got acquainted with Harrer, who eventually became his tutor and confidant.

In February 1962, he was the leader of the team of four climbers who made the first ascent of the Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m, 16,024ft; later named Puncak Jaya) on Papua, Indonesia (then Dutch New Guinea), the highest peak in Oceania and one of the Seven Summits. In October 2002, the Dalai Lama presented Harrer with the International Campaign for Tibet's Light of Truth Award for his efforts to bring the situation in Tibet to international attention. After the film was released, the director confirmed that two crews secretly shot about 20 minutes of footage for the movie in Tibet.

First Edition thus, with coloured frontispiece and numerous plates in monochrome, light tape-marks on paste-downs; navy cloth, gilt back, red top, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter crudely reinforced at inner edges.

A little fading to the publisher's top edge stain, and a little spotting to the edges and endpapers. In 1930s British India, Harrer and fellow-Austrian Peter Aufschnaiter are on an expedition to climb Nanga Parbat when WW II breaks out.
