First of all, this, like most of the options presented has been referred to as Generic. And that’s because they are. You’ll find these online listed under numerous brand names and appearing in various different colours. Some company just buys them raw from the manufacturer slaps a badge on it (normally based on best for-profit to them) They all look similar and do the same thing and they all do it just as well (poorly) as the next. If it looks like or even just similar to the picture below – it’s one of them and choosing between the different ones really doesn’t matter. Washes are a kind of thin paint, designed to run into the recesses on your miniature. These will give depth and nuance to your models, especially the areas with lots of texture and shadow. Washes are applied on top of layer paints once the previous layers are dry. Washes tend to pool up, and you’ll use your brush to position these pools where you want them on your model. Painting miniatures is an incredibly relaxing and rewarding hobby, one that can bring a bit of meditative joy to your free time while also adding beautiful bits to your favorite board games and role-playing games. But it can be daunting to build up the skills and tools you need to get started. Although you get fewer color options (and therefore slightly less value) than with Vallejo, it doesn’t really matter. This set is a great starting point for painting any model , and it can also teach how to mix your own colors instead of relying on one brand to supply your options.

The Army Painter washes are very good for their price . I use them regularly with my miniatures and actually prefer them to some more expensive options, like Citadel. Citadel (Games Workshop’s paint division) is a staple name in miniature war games. This starter set from the makers of Warhammer 40,000 has something many others don’t — basic modeling tools . FauxHammer – Latest Video on YouTube Best Beginner Airbrush for Miniatures & 3D Prints – Introduction Reaper paints may seem old school for most advanced mini painters, but they are also a good initiation paint for beginners. A good example is the Reaper Core Skills Painting kit.Neither option is particularrly considered a good airbrush for miniatures, but the standard dual-action finger trigger is much more common in airbrushes for miniature painting. Other controls on Airbrushes for Miniature Painting A primer is a special application you coat your model with to prepare the surface for paint. A primer fills in microscopic imperfections in a plastic, metal, or resi But it comes with the heftiest price tag. And honestly, when you see the cost of the better performing options are below, it alone makes this one appear almost redundant as a choice. But hold on… Some of you may recognise this guy below from my guide on stripping paint off miniatures, He seemed the perfect model to test out some flesh paint on and the image below shows how much I screwed this up originally. Again about an hour and 3 layers of paint + a wash for the standard brush.

The needle sizes on the Sotar is in fact 0.21 mm and 0.33 mm when it comes to Fine and medium, The Krome have the same diameter setup but the the 0.21 needle is called super-fine and the 0.33 needle is called fine. So, in principle, like paint brush sizes #2, #1, #0, #000 etc, the smaller the brush/nozzle the finer the paint/spray line. And just like paintbrushes, beginners will often believe the smaller the better for miniatures. But it gets a bit more complicated with airbrushes because of things like the Cult of Paint Infinity CRplus (the best airbrush for miniature painters). Where you get a twin tapered 0.4mm needle allowing for finer lines than a typical 0.02 needle. We’ve mentioned several times that contrast-style paints can be deceptive in how they’ll actually look on your model. Below you’ll find the official color guides for Citadel Contrast paints, as well as those same paints applied on top of various surfaces — including metallic paints.

It’s small, compact and not only can you prime and paint, but you can also do some effects like Zenithal highlight (shading directly from above with lighter colours of paint) and volume shading (like zenithal but focussed on specific shapes of the model).

The newest kind of paints available on the market are called contrast paints, named after the progenitors of the type — Citadel Contrast Paints. Ok, so I know it looks like I’ve paired up 2 airbrushes into one category, but the only difference between the HP-BS& HP-CS is the size of the fixed paint cup (do you see how airbrush model names can be confusing?). The HP-CS has a 7ml paint cup and the HP-BS has a 1.5ml paint cup. Washes are manufactured by just about every company that makes layer paints, including Citadel (Games Workshop), The Army Painter, and Vallejo. Contrast paints The Infinity CRplus 0,15, 0,2 & 0,4 come with 0.15mm, 0.2mm and 0.4mm needles respectively. The 0,4 retail box also upgrades the changeable paint cup from 2ml to 5ml. They offer two different two-in-one kits, one with the 0.15 and 0.4mm nozzles, the other with the 0.2 & 0.4mm nozzles. Each of these comes with both 2ml and 5ml paint cups. With its almost luminous Green Handle, Chrome Body and Pistol Grip trigger – This Airbrush certainly has the most interesting look of all of the models on this list. The Grex Tritium or as it’s more commonly known, the TG, is an excellent all-round Airbrush and perfect for those of us with hands prone to aching. On top of being practically pre-thinned, Reaper colors go on smoothly, making for good-looking matte surfaces . And, just like with the Vallejo and The Army Painter sets, you can mix your own colors. Acrylic Paints, which most model airbrushers use, aren’t always directly suited to airbrush painting (Specifically Citadel or Vajjelo Model/ Game Color). This is why many of our favourite paint brands now offer an ‘Air’ range. Many other brands are much more suited to Airbrush painting right out of the bottle. Even then, smaller nozzles are still more prone to clogging.

Miniature Painters may be familiar with these types of devices as they are available from Green Stuff World (an awesome Hobby retailer with some super cool stuff). But remember what I was saying about Generic – Green Stuff World’s kit is this, with a GSW logo on. Drybrushing is a common technique used in layer painting alongside edge highlighting, and in that context it’s not much of a big deal. Just get a brush, put some paint on it, then wipe nearly all of that paint off. Drag that dry brush against the sharper details on your miniature and voila, off comes the paint. It’s like edge highlighting, but a bit softer and over a larger area.

Some mold lines you can only see once you’ve begun priming. On Frodo, mold lines reach from the base of the miniature up to its shoulder, including along the edge of the sword Sting. On Geralt, they run from his left armpit down to the ground along the outside of his leg.
