Description

I REALLY wanted to love it, particularly given those good things. It just gave me way too many reasons to not love it. It has no issues going over the harm to indigenous communities in Australia and Guatemala, but completely avoids mentioning how US-Americans harmed indigenous communities. Instead of just studying history, let’s think about HerStory too! In this uplifting and inspiring book, children can learn about 50 intrepid women from around the world and throughout history. Telling the stories of their childhood, the challenges they faced and the changes they made, each gorgeously illustrated spread is a celebration of girl power in its many forms. With a range of pioneering careers – from astronauts to activists, musicians to mathematicians and many more – young readers will be inspired to follow their own dreams and to make the world a better place. Compelling, motivating and brilliantly illustrated in equal measure, this is the perfect introduction to just some of the amazing women who have shaped our world.

HERSTORY: 50 Women and Girls Who Shook the World

With a new queen on the throne, suitors appeared from all over Europe. But only one man came close to capturing Elizabeth’s heart: Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. However, she was determined not to marry, even for love. Although Parliament refused to give her the money she needed to rule unless she married, she resisted: she would rule England alone.

Keep in touch

Herstory provides inspiration as well as information about influential women and girls throughout history. I recommend it for readers aged 9 and up. Herstory: an overview of the herstory of childbirth from early humans to the emergence of modern maternity systems.

During the 1970s and 1980s, second-wave feminists saw the study of history as a male-dominated intellectual enterprise and presented "herstory" as a means of compensation. [6] The term, intended to be both serious and comic, [7] became a rallying cry used on T-shirts and buttons as well as in academia. [8]

Enlightenment, empire, and revolution

The legacy: how the legacy of herstory continues to influence the modern cultural landscape of childbirth. Women have long have been portrayed as sitting on the sidelines of history. Now 150 biographic sketches shed new light on such familiar figures as the Bronte sisters and Clara Barton, while revealing the rarely studied yet remarkable achievements of women warriors. Historical essays place these women in the context of their times, while sidebars highlight women's wit, wisdom, and inventions on all frontiers, from science to fashion.

The topic of undiscovered works by female composers has been covered a great deal in recent years. When the pandemic hit, unable to do my regular teaching, I decided to investigate some female composers for myself. What first started out as personal curiosity developed into a signifiant journey of discovery. The more I researched, the more I realised how little was known about these composers and how fascinating their stories were. Most importantly, because many of these women were piano teachers, their work was enormously pedagogically rich. I found a treasure trove of new material from the baroque, classical, romantic and early 20th century periods that really spoke to me and my students.”

Tour of the Book

On this list, you not only find some of the best American history books, on topics spanning slavery and empire, Civil War, and Indigenous histories, but also stories ranging from Asia to Africa, and everywhere in between. This list traverses continents, historical eras, the rise and fall of once-great empires, while occasionally stopping off to hone in on specific, localized events that you might never have heard of. I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too.” a b Devoney Looser, British Women Writers and the Writing of History ( Johns Hopkins University Press: 2000).
