I absolutely loved playing Earth solo, for a game that already minimised down time, the solo mode makes it even better. You’re constantly getting new sprouts, canopies and plants and it’s great. The little trees you grow are just the best, and they score you points if they reach their maximum potential! Gaia is also a worthy opponent, you definitely need to think about your placements and fauna, or Gaia will definitely defeat you. There’s something beautiful about your finished island and Gaia’s one too. She gets trees too! And even when you lose (and it’s likely), it’s still so satisfying to see your soil powers, sprouts and flowers all working together. I love that one of the hottest games at the moment is about soil. And ecosystems. And watering plants. Earth is an engine and tableau building game all about flora, fauna, terrain and ecosystems. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised this kind of theme has resonated with so many people because there’s something relaxing about earth and soil and nature. One of the key parts of the game is that when anyone takes an action, everybody else benefits from it too. I love when downtime is reduced and there’s a constant influx of resources. In The Pillars of the Earth, two to four players take on the role of rival builders. Your aim? Contribute materials towards the erection (no giggling) of Kingsbridge’s sumptuous cathedral. Worker placement stands at the pulpit, but an assortment of mechanisms emerge from the foundations. Pillars lasts for six rounds, and each occurs in a formulaic, structured manner. You also use the shared objective fauna board, where you get more points the earlier you meet the objective. Gaia has a fauna card that’ll score her the objectives (and she’ll place her leaf token), but you have flexibility in which one she’ll go for (she’ll always go for the highest number of points). It’s definitely recommended to focus on these in solo as Gaia will come for you if you don’t pay attention to them (like she’s done to me). You also have the option of adding some extra ecosystem cards for scoring beside the fauna objectives. Pawns placed in Kingsbridge earn an Advantage card. (Two get revealed at the start of each round.) Some provide immediate/one-off rewards; others have ongoing passive benefits. They’re ‘free’ to those who placed pawns here. But remember, you aren’t really claiming them gratis. You paid for them in coins, when you placed your pawn in the first place. This is the same for claiming extra Craftsmen cards in Shiring.The code is personal and remember where you left off playing. This way you can easily pause in between and / or continue the game at a different time. Photo Cards At any time except in the middle of an action or ability, players can convert 3 sprouts to 2 soil (but not the other way around). Note that 3 sprouts is 3 points at the end of the game. Earth is an open world engine builder for 1 to 5 players with simple rules but tons of strategic possibilities. With its encyclopedic nature and the enormous number of unique cards and combinations, every single game will allow you to discover new synergies and connections, just as our vast and fascinating world allows us to do! Your Master Builders look like symbolic wooden bishops from a chess set. Coloured cubes make up the resources. The workers are the most exciting pieces, which isn’t saying much. They’re simplistic human silhouettes. In comparison to modern game pieces, these components feel practical, rather than pretty. Dated comes to mind, and dare I say it… dull. Each player has an Ecosystem card and there are 2 randomly selected public Ecosystem cards. Player's ecosystem cards can only be scored by the player that owns it. Public Ecosystem cards are scored by all players.

Earth has some of the most satisfying tableau-building I’ve seen in a long time. And it blends that really well with resource management that feels like a puzzley balancing act for players Event cards can be played at any time except in the middle of an action or ability. Played event cards are placed in a pile on the player board. Some event cards have negative score and will make the player lose points at the end of the game. The rules are very clear: events do not count for any Fauna and Ecosystem cards, except if explicitly written on the card, with a lightning icon.

Earth is a tableau builder for 1 to 5 players with simple rules and countless strategic possibilities. With its encyclopedic nature and a near-infinite number of tableau combinations, every single game will allow you to discover new synergies and connections, just as our vast and fascinating world allows us to do! Earth is an engine building game played over rounds in which each player gets a turn creating their own island with its terrain and flora. The game ends at the end of the round in which a player completes their island of 16 cards in a 4x4 grid.

Plant (green): Place cards from your hand in your tableau. You must pay the cost of the card with soil. Cards must form a 4x4 grid at the end of the game. When placing a card, it must touch existing cards from your tableau (diagonally or orthogonally). The active player plants 2 cards and the others plant 1 card. After, the active player draws 4 cards and keep 1 and the others draw 1 card. (Drawing cards cannot be undone so, for the active player, planting the second card cannot be undone. For the others, planting cannot be undone) First out has to pay an eye-watering seven gold coins. If you’re happy to pay, great; the board is your oyster. Current cost a bit rich for your blood, though? No shame in that – you can pass, instead. Regardless, the cost marker slides down one value. The next Master Builder gets drawn from the bag. Now it’s their turn to decide: they can visit any vacant spot for six coins, or pass, and so on. Just as every campaign constantly evolves, so to do the heroes that find themselves caught up in it. As they travel to new locales and overcome challenges, your heroes will learn from their experiences, gaining valuable knowledge and useful items for the rest of their journey. After each adventure, you’ll make camp so your characters can rest and recuperate. And while you're here, you’ll have the opportunity to upgrade your items and increase your hero’s power.
