We all enjoyed the movie and loved Lesley Manville's performance as Mrs Harris. In fact I was so enamored by Mrs Harris that I immediately borrowed a digital book from the San Jose Public library that included two Mrs Harris novellas. Both written by Paul Gallico, an American living in England. And though her life might seem drab and humdrum to many, Mrs Harris knows and loves beauty and colour.

Gallico was born in New York City in 1897. His father was the Italian concert pianist, composer and music teacher Paolo Gallico ( Trieste, May 13, 1868 – New York, July 6, 1955), and his mother, Hortense Erlich, came from Austria; they had emigrated to New York in 1895. Gallico's graduation from Columbia University was delayed to 1921, having served a year and a half in the United States Army during World War I. [2] He first achieved notice in the 1920s as a sportswriter, sports columnist, and sports editor of the New York Daily News. There are still a few more adventures associated with the dress, and Mrs Harris is a changed woman. Again, things do not go as Mrs. Harris planned and she winds up putting her near and dear ones in serious trouble. But it is still the end of 1950's and things are simpler.want something hard enough and work for it, and you’ll get it, but when you get it it will either prove to be not wholly what you wanted, or something will happen to spoil it.” And it was that love of beauty and colour that called Mrs Harris to Paris. It all started when one of her clients left her wardrobe door open … This, however, became a bit of an irony as I read because the entire time I kept imagining how much better the story must have worked on the big screen as opposed to the book. I really think the magic and sweetness of the plot will work much better on film. Gallico once confessed to New York magazine: "I'm a rotten novelist. I'm not even literary. I just like to tell stories and all my books tell stories.... If I had lived 2,000 years ago I'd be going around to caves, and I'd say, 'Can I come in? I'm hungry. I'd like some supper. In exchange, I'll tell you a story. Once upon a time there were two apes.' And I'd tell them a story about two cavemen." [3] the litter of dirty dishes and greasy pans in the sink, acres of stale, rumpled, unmade beds, clothing scattered about, wet towels on the bathroom floor, water left in the tooth-glass, dirty laundry … and of course, cigarette ends in the ashtrays, dust on tables and mirrors, and all the other litter that human pigs are capable of leaving behind them when they leave their homes in the morning.

Both novellas are a little predictable and you could guess the outcome of the second one in particular after the first few chapters. I didn't find this worried me too much. I think I just accepted them for what they were - fluffy feel good escapism. Some of the people she met looked down their noses at the common char-woman, but others where charmed by her sincerity and the clarity of her ambition. In that very instant she fell victim to the artist; at that very moment was born within her the craving to possess such a garment. This is a fascinating series by Paul Gallico. The books read like young adult books. They are written in simple prose that should appeal to younger readers.

Ein Kleid von Dior [ de] (1982) West German TV film starring Inge Meysel; followed by five more TV films based on Paul Gallico's novels. Ada Harris is standing for no nonsense: she has the money and she is determined. After many misunderstandings, many unusual encounters, and with the help of a distinguished elderly gentleman (who has fond memories of the charlady who brightened his life in his gloomy college room when he studied at an English university) she attends a salon presentation of the latest ‘collection’, and sees the dress she wants to buy.
