While most of the horror is psychological there are some violent and disturbing scenes including a sword stick being put to good use and a couple of stranglings . An annoying lead actress leads us through a story about an old man dying in the shower; his granddaughter and boyfriend move into the property, only to find weird neighbours and even weirder events taking place in the home. But as the film progresses, she starts making smart decisions rather than trite, tired ones; she shows a surprising amount of passion and energy in her performance, even if the script is determined to try and sabotage her. Yes, there is some unavoidable cliche in this type of storyline, but my advice is to go with the flow. The film was inspired by several real life killings, from the Hillside Strangler being two cousins to the ghost rapes of Bolivia, where women in a Bolivian Mennonite community were convinced that ghosts or demons were attacking them in their sleep when it was really men using animal anesthetic.

Then by halfway through it had actually accomplished a feat few movies these days are capable of – it made me jump and squeal like a child, with a really beautifully executed scare.

Looking to find answers she starts investigating her grandfather's mysterious death but in doing so uncovers the horrific truth and the shocking events of the past.Plot holes - not sure who the squatter was, what the dead cat added to the story apart from an attempted chill factor, or what the heck they were doing with the extracted blood. Fortunately, the effective scares balances with the bad acting, making movie neither too horrible, or too enjoyable.

There were a few good jump scares but it's not a scary movie in my opinion, it was more of a suspense/mystery movie with some frights. It takes the basics of a creepy, haunted house tale and layers in a couple of complexities that heightens the interest level. As soon as I put the dvd on I thought oh no its one of them cheap horror, which it was🙄 it was rather slow and not scary in the slightest. Although I pretty much guessed the ending well before the reveal it still held my interest throughout. Some of the scenes are not for the squeamish, but if you've seen tons of Horror as I have, you won't be too bothered with the severed heads and limbs or the extreme violence.

But then it couldn’t resist cramming in jump scare on top of jump scare, so I went back to hating it for the next twenty minutes or so. Not much here that you haven't seen before, although there are a couple of creepy scenes and decent scares. The jump scares are genuine moments and just going along with the main character uncovering such a disturbing past is horror done right.
