Though she hesitates to go so far as to say she created full-on characters, she reveals she had in mind “ a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel.

Mitski's carefully crafted songs have often been portrayed as emotionally raw, overflowing confessionals from a fevered chosen girl, but in her fifth album, Mitski introduces a persona who has been teased before but never so fully present until now-a woman in control. Be the Cowboy is simultaneously Mitski’s most and least conventionally pop album to date and the most dramatic pivot in her discography. There is plenty of buoyant swagger on Be The Cowboy, but just as much interrogation into self-mythology. Wall to wall with 80'S synth doodling, tinkling keys and organ, melodic picking and of course THAT seductive voice, the 14 tracks here would in a sane world make this lady a household name. Included in Spin's "The 51 Best Albums of 2018" -- "The concision and universality of Mitski’s music and lyrics are reminiscent of American Songbook ballads, sketching vague scenes into which listeners can easily insinuate their own misadventures. In ‘Be The Cowboy’, Mitski delves into the loneliness of being a symbol and the loneliness of being someone and how it can feel so much like being no one. Melancholy folk-tinged tunes with a country twang, flashes of orchestral strings and even some disco-pop so you can dance to it while you cry.

Mitski’s carefully crafted songs have often been portrayed as emotionally raw, overflowing confessionals from a fevered chosen girl, but in her fifth album, Mitski introduces a persona who has been teased before but never so fully present until now—a woman in control. For most of the tracks, we didn't layer the vocals with doubles or harmonies, to achieve that campy 'person singing alone on stage' atmosphere. In 'Be The Cowboy', Mitski delves into the loneliness of being a symbol and the loneliness of being someone, and how it can feel so much like being no one. The gargantuan opener 'Geyser' is a towering monolith of bursting percussion and fuzz-laden guitars. Because after fine-tuning your taste over a lifetime, trusting someone else to curate your record collection can be scary.

And once we’ve found that gem of a record, we do everything we can to help you appreciate the music. stars out of 5 -- "There’s plenty implicit, from the DIY American mythology of the title, to the way the songs validate voices that are shaky, hurting, irrational, and damaged, while also being smart, wry, powerful, and deserving of love. With a lot of the romantic infatuations I’ve had,” she says, “when I look back, I wonder, Did I want them or did I want to be them?

There is plenty of buoyant swagger to the album, but just as much interrogation into self-mythology.

Because women have so little power and showing emotion is seen as weakness, this ‘character’ clings to any amount of control she can get. With the mass majority of music critics already lauding 'Be The Cowboy' as one of the top albums of 2018 and Mitski's best to date, I think it would be a great disservice to pass her and this music off as 'wacky' or 'quirky' as I know some people lazily do.

When those reviews do eventually start to roll in, it's a dead certainty that someone will gripe about the record's 32 minute playing time. Infused with a pink glow and mysterious blue light, the performer in Be The Cowboy makes a pact with her audience that the show must go on, but as we draw nearer to the end, a charming ditty recedes into ghostly, faded melancholia, as an angelic voice breaks through to make direct communication. I had been on the road for a long time, which is so isolating, and had to run my own business at the same time," Mitski explains, "a lot of this record was me not having any feelings, being completely spent, but then trying to rally myself and wake up and get back to Mitski. Vincent, Mitski does at least share the latter's aptitude on the guitar, and she colours this album with catchy jangling and curt stabs when the fancy takes her.
