My professional qualifications are: PGDip in Library and Information Management from the University of Ulster and CILIP Chartership (MCLIP). Remarkables REMARKABLES Intriguing, stunning, or otherwise remarkable books These include fine editions, foreign publications exceptional for their interest or production, special editions and some first-rate books from very small publishers. I loved Emma Carroll’s ‘In Darkling Wood’ from 2016 Bookfest and this story may have even topped that. Perennials PERENNIALS constant friends A selection of novels, memoirs and more by some of our favourite authors. There are some true heart-in-your-mouth moments and heavily moving parts that make it so difficult to put it down.

Well what can I say Emma Carroll has brought an enlightened and heart wrenching version of events during WW2 with the poignancy of Good Night Mr Tom and the sad reality of the plight of Jewish refugees trying to flee to the UK. Being an evacuee she has an understanding of the prejudice that can come from lack of understanding. Olive is a wonderful young girl: she is clever, resilient, kind and likeable, but is also capable of making mistakes and taking actions which she later regrets. And then she finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous. We were the going to be beaten by hate" is a message that transcends the period setting, speaking straight to a contemporary audience. It seemed extremely realistic, so realistic I thought I was the character Olive and I would recommend it to someone who gets bored quickly because it has a lot of drama in it from the first few pages. After months of air raid bombings in London, Olive and Cliff are evacuated to the Devon coast for their safety. But the awesomeness of the book doesn’t thrill me because iv’e read the girl who walked on air and it was fantastic so i also recommend that book to if you enjoyed letters of the light house so far i’m giving it a 9 out of 10 but at the moment i think it could easily change! I am reading letters of light house now and i have to be honest so far its amazing the secrets in it blew me and it surprised me at how Queenie is at the moment.

Carroll has written wonderful characters, a realistic plot where the kids can make significant contributions to the war effort without it being unrealistic, and added just enough of the hard stuff so as not to negate the horror of war or overburden kids with it either. In the midst of World War Two, a bombing in London becomes the explosive catalyst that sees two sisters separated. The thing that touched me most within this wonderful novel was the opportunity to hear the stories behind all those effected by war along with the refugees and the impact they had on the locals. Initially, I didn't want to read a WW2 book, but having read it, I'm really glad that I did and it has left me in the mood for more Emma Carroll books. We meet three siblings during an air raid in London and follow Olive and her brother Cliff on the hunt for the truth to their sister going missing.
