Behind these friendly central characters, lurks the longer darker tradition of Macbeth’s crones or terrible fairy tale figures like the witch in Hansel and Gretel. It is the emotional growth of the character, not nifty wand work, which always triumphs and brings satisfaction in the end … But how brilliant to have a bubbling cauldron of magical fun with potions, spells and flying broomsticks along the way.

Chocolate biscuits is one of my favourites … but I don’t think I could be trusted not to eat a few while I was doing the counting! Ants are another good one, but it might take a while to train them all to stand in a nice neat line while you measured yourself against them. This book is about a witch who has an aunt that won’t let her sleep she keeps waking her up in the night and telling her that she is a bad witch and will never be any good at doing spells. I feel really bad for bewildering Bella because she has gone through a lot with her aunt Hemlock but at the same time she is extremely naughty.The book’s cover attracted me due to the bright colours and I really enjoyed reading about Bella and her adventures! Bella Broomstick doesn’t have as many pages as the Shrinking Violet books – an ideal size for a bookworm like H to finish in ONE DAY! But my husband, who is Swiss, says that she would be Bella Besenstiel in German, which I think sounds brilliant. It is always very exciting – and slightly strange – to know these are the same words I wrote but not be able to understand them.

I thought this was a good book and I like the characters and my favourite one was the skeleton witch teacher. I would recommend this book to people who like witchy books because this book will really suit them. Her nasty Aunt Hemlock sends her to live in Person World, and she isn’t allowed to do any magic ever again.H is a big fan of her books, so when we were given the chance to review and feature Lou on Mum Friendly, she was super excited!
