It was clear that Glenfiddich XX was considerably more popular, so I had to add this to my tasting list and capture the tasting notes. The other whisky is the Glenfiddich Project XX. This one is a little more straightforward. It is made up of whiskies selected by the distillery’s 20 brand ambassadors, from a variety of different casks, which were then combined by master blender Brian Kinsman.

Seb finished the tasting of the Glenfiddich IPA by saying that for him it was an “exciting project to be a part of, [I] learned a lot about whisky science and hope that Brian learned that some beers are good.” [Cue: laughter] Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. The idea behind the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment was quite unusual but one we were passionate about – we wanted to really play with the flavours to see what we could create. Glenfiddich’s first whisky finished in IPA craft beer casks is testament to us challenging ourselves to produce something vibrant and unusual. The result is a liquid with a zesty citrus note followed by soft, sweet vanilla and a hint of fresh hops. The innovative flavour comes from carefully hand selecting the right malt whiskies to complement the extra hoppy notes.” During the beginning of 2018, I tasted the Glenfiddich IPA Cask whisky and wrote my own tasting notes about it. This release was the first in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series and I loved it. The second release in this series is the Glenfiddich XX whisky and many people had opinions about this release. The Glenfiddich 15-Year-Old is matured in virgin oak, American bourbon, and Portuguese sherry casks as well as bottled at 40% ABV. It has notes of banana, honey, coffee, oak, apples, sherry, oranges, berry, white pepper, and milk chocolate. It also has a warm, fruity, and flowery finish. The Glenfiddich 18 Year In the mouth: it is hoppy, yeasty, and malty, but it doesn’t feel too youthful. Citrus. Blood orange. Not at all a heavy texture, but quite silky. Toffee. Touch of vanilla. Very creamy. Grassy, straw-like notes. Chaff and then a coffee bitterness, more like a creamy latte. Fresh bread. The maltiness and hoppy notes return for the finish. The Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old is matured in Spanish sherry oak and American bourbon casks. It has notes of pear, malt, cream, butterscotch, and oak as well as a mellow and smooth finish. The Glenfiddich 15 Year

On the nose: an exceptionally fresh nose, with more a winey nose: notes of Chardonnay, perhaps Sauternes. A few classic Glenfiddich traits manifest. Blood oranges. Toffee. A touch of yeast. Green apples. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. The Glenfiddich 18-Year-Old is matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks as well as bottled at 43% ABV. It has notes of grapefruit, ginger, dried apricot, chocolate, wood, cinnamon, and baked toffee apples. The Glenfiddich 21 YearGlenfiddich’s Project XX (pronounced “twenty”) is a unique experiment that defies easy categorization. I’m going to let the distillery explain before I go any further:

The Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old is finished in casks that were previously used to age Caribbean rum and bottled at 40% ABV. This is done for four months. It has notes of sweet toffee, vanilla, lime, banana, ginger, and fig. It also has a long, dry, warm, and spicy finish. The Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23 Year Translating to 'valley of the deer' in Scottish Gaelic, Glenfiddich distillery is one the oldest family-owned whisky companies in Scotland. A colossus in the whisky industry, Glenfiddich was established by William Grant in 1876 and had the first spirit running off its stills in 1886. Today the company is still run by his descendants, and as the first brand to truly market itself as a single malt whisky , Glenfiddich now accounts for approximately 30% of all single malt sales worldwide. Update June 2017: I tasted a second bottle of Project XX and found this bottle to be significantly smokier than the original, with a pronounced decrease in sherry character, without so much of the sweet citrus on the nose. In its stead I found aromas of almonds, tea leaf, baked apples, and gentle baking spices. The palate is also sherry-restrained, though here more citrus notes make themselves known — though with more of a lime influence than an orange one. It’s a curiosity that shows how different one bottle can be from the next, and unfortunately a step down to around a B+. NOSE: Ripe Golden Delicious apples, dark stone fruits and spice with hints of fresh flowers. Some vanilla and oak are floating about. Not the most complex nose. The result is two new whiskies. One is an IPA cask-finished single malt, and the other is an ambassador crowd-source whisky aimed the connoisseur. Glenfiddich IPA Experiment is a No Age Statement whisky finished for just 3 months in casks that had held an IPA beer created by the nearby Speyside Craft Brewery. The ale itself was created using British Challenger hops for its fruity flavours, and which would in theory go well with the Glenfiddich’s inherent fruitiness.Glenfiddich, one of the world’s biggest whisky brands, made a bit of a splash recently by announcing a couple of new experimental whiskies in which they hope to ‘push the boundaries of Scotch whisky’. It’s actually very difficult to do new stuff with Scotch whisky, as it is the most heavily regulated drink in the world. Yet in a cluttered up market place, and with a desire to reach a younger audience (not to mention not putting an age statement on the bottle) there needs to be an interesting enough marketing hook to create some noise around it. Not to mention some good branding. I certainly think they’ve achieved that. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. In the mouth: blood oranges (I tend to find that a lot in Glenfiddich), with toffee fudge, a lot of vanilla, some cinnamon. Again, lightly textured but with a silky edge. Sultanas, raisins – European oak showing itself? – with cloves, lots and lots of apples, pastry. Hazelnuts. A sprinkling of muscovado sugar. Milk chocolate. Quite autumnal. Touch tannic on the finish. Really very nice. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Probably not the most popular opinion, but I prefer the Glenfiddich IPA cask miles above this Glenfiddich XX release. I bought the two bottles at the same time, and my IPA bottle is nearly empty. This one might take a few years.

aws you in and makes you want to spend proper time with the dram. The palate develops significantly, it really is lovely, exotic fruits shine through again with the addition of white pepper and a gentle warming mouthfeel. The XX stands for 20, representing the 20 ambassadors that took part and the thumbprint on the bottle is an amalgamation of the twenty ambassadors’ thumbprints. The Distillery: Glenfiddich

It’s an unorthodox whisky to be sure, but much to my surprise it’s a completely worthwhile one. I think it’s because Glenfiddich is not really mixing whiskies at random but is rather mixing these whiskies with a bit of a guided hand. There’s some method to the madness here, perhaps thanks to a benevolent intelligent designer working behind the scenes. How else would the mix of 17 bourbon casks and just 3 wine casks come to be if each of the 20 ambassadors was selecting in a vacuum?
