I decided to apply clean water to each colour individually to avoid over blending or bleeding and found the colours dried lighter than the application was applied. Graphite and colour combine to create this unique formulation of watercolour pencil pigments and graphite.

Simply add a little water to your Graphitint sketch and a hint of colour in your sketch becomes a rich, vibrant colour. Developed especially for water-soluble pencils, this smooth paper is perfect for all water-soluble media. You cannot blend them or completely erase them, and I think these only work best when mixed with water, very much like the Derwent Inktense pencils. The extendable front plate has a self feeding mechanism which stops when the pencil has reached a superb point. The fine graphite particles in the paint will settle into the paper grain - a texture that can be used to capture a myriad of effects.

These pans contain graphite, so it makes sense that they sparkle in a similar manner (though not as pronounced) to other pearlescent or metallic paints that contain mica or light-reflecting pigments.Derwent Graphitint Pencils have the same properties in terms of hardness and solubility in water as Derwent's popular 4B Watersoluble Sketching Pencil, so you can experiment with adding colour but retain all the familiar qualities of your favourite graphite pencil. Colours can be lightened or removed with an eraser or by lifting out with a brush and clean water and the colours range from soft greys and blues to warm russets and plums. As you can see from the swatch above, the colours dry can be viewed as similar, that is until you activate them with water. p>

45. Finally the end cap is painted with a flash of colour, which corresponds to the pigment in the core.

With only 24 colours in the range, it is difficult to find the right one especially for this stunning Red-legged Honeycreeper as there is only the Ocean blue colour in the set that comes close to the blues on this bird and that was quite a muted tone. Use Derwent Graphitint pencils dry to give a subtle hint of colour to your graphite drawing and add water to make the colours more vibrant. Drawing using Graphitint is lovely, though I find not enough of the 'wet' colour is coming up on the dry version, so you need to be very careful of which pencil is what colour. Dry applications provide a hint of colour, while adding water transforms pigments into rich shades with an underlying graphite sheen.
